About the Calgary Poet Laureate
On July 26, 2011 City Council approved a motion to establish a Poet Laureate position for Calgary. Calgary's Poet Laureate will compose and present poetry for official City of Calgary occasions, raise awareness of local issues through commissioned works and act as an ambassador and advocate for the arts in Calgary. A volunteer Selection Committee will appoint the Poet Laureate to a two-year term with an annual honorarium of $10,000. A total of 14 nomination packages were received for the position in January 2012. Six short list candidates have been selected and invited to take part in the Calgary Poet Laureate Showcase, an event unique to Calgary in Poet Laureate programs across Canada. The showcase provides the Selection Committee with an example of the short list nominees' work in addition to their ability to speak and perform to an audience and engage with Calgary's citizens. The first Calgary Poet Laureate will be announced in April 2012 during National Poetry Month.
The Calgary Poet Laureate is funded by the following Poet Laureate Ambassadors:
The Calgary Foundation
Calgary Chamber of Commerce
First Calgary Financial
FirstEnergy Capital Corp.
