This year marks the 2nd Annual Business Design & Technology Transforming the World in New York. BDT Conference explores the intersection between business, design, technology and social impact by bringing together leading experts from the public, non-profit, and for-profit sector. BDT Conference is designed to present strategies and techniques on how to measure an organization's social impact. In the past year, we have brought worldwide speakers such as Tonya Surman, Founding CEO of The Centre for Social Innovation, Marita Cheng, Founder of 2Mar Robotics, Founder, Board Member of Robogals Global and Jessica Minhas, Social justice activist, Speaker and TV Host, just to name a few. BDT Conference is Made in NYC and hosted by SMPLCT Lab in partnership with Internet Week NY.

As a pioneer in sustainable commerce. Maxine is a leading authority on sustainability in apparel supply chain and the application of mission and story-telling in brand development. Maxine is the co-founder of Zady, which is among the first online retailers to seamlessly integrate commerce, rich media content and social media, providing its community with a truly dynamic shopping experience. Zady empowers customers to learn about the conscious consumer movement and purchase beautifully-constructed goods that are created with craftsmanship and artisanship. Zady was included in Fast Company’s World’s Top Ten Most Innovative Companies in Retail, was named by Entrepreneur Magazine as Start-Up of the Month, and has been named by Mashable as the #1 Business that Rocks Content Marketing. Prior to launching Zady, Maxine worked in international law and advocacy, first at the United Nations General Assembly, where she served as an advisor and later at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda where she was a legal clerk. Maxine received her Juris Doctorate degree with honors from Columbia Law School. She lives in New York City with her husband Stéphane.
Virgilia Kaur Pruthi is a first generation Indian-American entrepreneur, community builder, and author. She has worked in product management for tech companies and consulted for Fortune 100 companies in the U.S., Latin America, Middle East, and India on go-to-market strategies, geographic expansion, and M&A. Prior to business school, she worked as Chief of Staff to an Ambassador of the UN while focusing on micro-finance related initiatives. After working in consulting, the entrepreneurial bug caught on to Virgilia and she has been toying around with ideas in the technology space ever since. She is the author of "An Immigrant's Guide To Making It In America" and the founder of Network of Women.
Sang H. Lee is the CEO and founder of Return on Change an online crowdinvestment platform. They connect startups and investors in critical industries such as Life Science, CleanTech, EdTech, Social Enterprise, and Tech. Just within the last 9 months, Return on Change has aggregated over $49 million of capital seeking investors and has secured over $5 million in commitments to date, with the largest single company successfully raising $1 million.
Sang is a recovering investment banker using his background in finance for good. His mission is to bring fundamental value creation into startup business to ensure sustainability while promoting the democratization of startup finance. He is also the Executive Director of CF50, a global crowdfunding think tank. He has been featured in both domestic and international publications including Forbes, Huffington Post, Entrepreneur Magazine, CNBC, Fast Company, Crains, and Express and was also recognized as a Good 100 changemaker and an Under30CEO Entrepreneur to Watch in New York City. Sang is recognized as an industry thought leader and has been requested to speak at venues such as the United Nations, International CES, National Science Foundation, Brown/Columbia universities, and the Council on Foreign Relations, among many others. Courtney Hardt is Creative Director, of Mercado Global. Courtney spearheads Mercado Global’s branding, design, and product development. She brings extensive fashion experience from both the luxury retail industry and the social enterprise world having worked in design and product development for Ralph Lauren and Coach, and as a consultant for NGOs in India and Bolivia. As an advocate for maintaining traditions among indigenous artisans, she has fostered a career bridging the gap between luxury retailers and social enterprises. Her passion led her to Guatemala where she established Mercado Global’s design and product development programs.
Sophia Sunwoo is the CEO and Co-Founder of Water Collective. She steers the Water Collective team as they actualize big picture solutions for rural communities in the developing world. Through robust solutions and economic empowerment, Water Collective has secured clean water for 25,000 people and fixed broken water projects for 19,000 people in West Africa in three years. Prior to Water Collective, Sophia built and sold her first company in 2010, with products placed in 250 retailers worldwide before her exit. Throughout her career, she has worked with several Fortune 500 companies, project managing the conception and execution of million dollar projects. She has a BBA from the Design and Management program at Parsons School of Design and the New School. Her dissertation on the infusion of business strategies into disaster prevention programs in the developing world was widely recognized by Parsons School of Design Strategies.
