About This Workshop

Who's it for?

This class is for moderately experienced JavaScript developers who are ready to build thin, powerful web applications using Backbone.js. If you're comfortable writing web applications but new to Backbone - or familiar with Backbone and ready to build your first application - this class is ideal for you.

It would also be a good idea for you to feel comfortable with the concepts found in our Foundations of Programming with JavaScript and JavaScript Best Practices classes. If you have any questions about whether this class is a good fit, drop us a line at training@bocoup.com and we’d be happy to talk with you!

What you'll learn:

Using real-life examples, attendees will learn to develop applications with a balance of flexibility and structure. In addition to the basics, this training will dive into advanced topics encompassing the latest browser technology such as offline storage, WebSockets and routing with the HTML5 History API.

In this two-day course, we’ll cover:

  • When to use Backbone
  • Intro to using RESTful APIs and MVC
  • Backbone Models
  • Backbone Collections
  • Backbone Views
  • Backbone Router
  • History Management
  • Best Practices for Structuring your Application
  • Testing & Debugging your Application
  • Taking the application real-time (Using WebSockets)
  • Playing Nice with Third-party APIs
This class runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, including morning refreshments and lunch.

Attendees should bring a laptop with WiFi and a power cord, ready with a code editor and and browser. We strongly recommend the Google Chrome browser.

We recommend one of the following text editors: TextMate, MacVim, Coda, or Sublime Text 2 for Mac; and E TextEditor, Notepad++, UltraEdit, or Sublime Text 2 for Windows. The most important thing is that you use a text editor you're comfortable with.
