Hair begets hair. In one sense, it is the mark and the identifier. In another sense, it is the mark maker. With regard to the specific site of the salon, hair becomes the ad hoc geometry, or shape by which the face, an evolving and mobile expression, is contained. Hair, in its flexibility, is also the tool by which we create a mark or cover—be it aesthetic or utilitarian.

This reflection is the source from which the objects, kits, and pieces in Brush are made. Testing and using these abstracted interpretations of calligraphy brushes and their cases upon acquisition is encouraged.

The opening reception for Brush will also include a wildly entertaining literary reading: Grabbing life by the tweezers, artist Julia Hartling and writer Melissa Markoff have come together to create the sardonic of Pluck This! The Ultimate A to Z Book About Eyebrows. Part Jezebel, part Tom Tomorrow (with a pinch of Gertrude Stein thrown in for good measure), the vibrantly illustrated Pluck This! reveals that eyebrows are more than just frames for the windows of the soul.
