Brown Bag Lunch and Learn Series - "Did you really just say that?"

Is your work environment uncomfortable or hostile because of hurtful, offensive language?  Are you the person in your company using such language?  Perhaps you’ve made a comment and had someone respond to you with “did you really just say that?”  This lunch and learn session will cover what stereotypical, biased language is, including a list of words and phrases to avoid.  It will also offer strategies for improving your communication, and how to repair a situation when you make a mistake.  Come learn how to strengthen your organization by working toward bias-free communication.

Presented by:
Dr. Regina McClinton, inaugural director of the Intercultural Training Certificate, Grand Valley State University

Realizing that Grand Valley State needed to add to its opportunities for students to be fully prepared to “shape their lives, their professions, and their societies”, Dr. McClinton and colleagues, Dr. Maria Cimitile and Dr. Mark Schaub, created the Intercultural Training Certificate to boost students’ intercultural competence, which supports students in valuing and respecting differences.

Dr. McClinton earned her Ph.D. in Plant Biology from University of California, Berkeley. In the midst of a successful scientific career she recognized the need to increase intercultural competence for GVSU students, and has devoted herself to this work. Dr. McClinton is also a certified diversity professional, with a long track record of making a difference in inclusion and diversity. Dr. McClinton has served as a member and president of the Minority Affairs Committee for the American Society for Plant Biology, the Diversity Committee of Sigma Xi, The Research Society, and has been a leader in inclusion and diversity efforts at UC Berkeley, University of Louisiana, Lafayette, and Grand Valley State University.

The Brown Bag Lunch and Learn Series is a partnership between the School of Public, Nonprofit and Health Administration and the Johnson Center for Philanthropy that serves as a resource to the nonprofit community and provides a learning opportunity for students, faculty, and practitioners. A variety of timely and relevant topics are presented throughout the academic year.

This event is free and open to the public. Please register in advance in order to obtain a parking pass. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch; coffee and tea will be provided.
