Twenty-Five Bronx Artists Received BCA’s 2013 BRIO Award
Award Reception & Networking Event on Wednesday, June 5th 
Longwood Art Gallery at Hostos Community College

Twenty-five Bronx artists are the 2013 recipients of the Bronx Council on the Arts’ (BCA) prestigious Bronx Recognizes Its Own (BRIO) Award for artistic excellence. An award reception and networking event will be held on Wednesday, June 5th  at 6:00pm at the Longwood Art Gallery  at Hostos Community College, 450 Grand Concourse at 149th Street in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. Directions to Hostos.

The June 5th event marks the twenty-fourth anniversary of BRIO, and is one of many activities scheduled for that evening’s Bronx Culture Trolley at the Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos along with a number of free Bronx Culture Trolley activities along the South Bronx Cultural Corridor.

BRIO winners, past and present, are invited to socialize and network with each other while welcoming the 2013 BRIO winners into the fold.

They are: 
Literary Arts: Phyllis Bowdwin
(fiction), Richard Frias (fiction), Jon Lewis Katz (fiction), Patricia O'Hanlon (non-fiction), Natalie N.Caro (poetry), Joel Daniels (poetry), Christian Lund (poetry), Leah Maddrie (poetry).

Media Arts: Mark Cabaroy (narrative film video), Firan Chislom (experimental film video), Laura Napier (documentary film video). 

Performing Arts: Jamali Corniel (story-telling), Juliette Jeffers (acting), Elizabeth Farnum (vocal music performance), Flaco Navaja (vocal music performance), Melissa Primavera (vocal music performance), Steven Lubin (vocal music performance), Avi Rothbard (instrumental music performance), Robert Silverman (music composition).

Visual Arts: Onyedika Chuke (sculpture), Dennis Delgado (sculpture), Donna Diamond (drawing), Rosemarie Fiore (mixed Media), Ruth Marshall (crafts), Amy Pryor (Printmaking)

Bronx Recognizes Its Own (BRIO)

In its 25th year, Bronx Recognizes Its Own (BRIO) continues to provide support for artistic development of individuals creating works of literary, media, performing, and visual arts in the Bronx. A minimum of 25 BRIO grants of $3,000 each will be awarded to individual artists residing in the Bronx.


BRIO award winners must complete a one-time public service activity to receive their complete award. The selection for awards is based solely on artistic excellence and is decided on by a panel of professional artists representing the various disciplines. Only artists living in the Bronx are eligible to apply for BRIO.
