Effective Android Messaging
Juan Gomez

Messaging is a powerful component of your Android app, opening up new usage scenarios and allowing you to engage your users in brand new ways. But sometimes implementing some of these messaging capabilities on Android can be a bit challenging, especially if you’re not aware of the different choices available and the tradeoffs presented by each one.

Juan will provide an overview of some of the most popular messaging options on the Android Ecosystem, as well as some tips and tricks on how to successfully implement them in your Android apps. We’ll talk about Basic Http messaging, Google’s Cloud Messaging (a.k.a. Push Notifications) and SMS, and finally we’ll touch on some newer techniques like Android’s Network Service Discovery and WebSockets.

This talk draws on some of the challenges faced by the Mobile Team at Eventbrite in enabling event organizers around the globe to replace costly dedicated barcode scanners with run-of-the-mill Android devices for events with thousands of attendees. These techniques also extrapolate to other app scenarios like instant messaging apps, peer-to-peer solutions, multiplayer games, and so on.

Juan Gomez is a Senior Mobile Engineer at Eventbrite; Pythonista, Co-Founder of PythonKC; Maker, Epicure, Husband, RaspberryPi and hardware hacking enthusiast. At Eventbrite he's a key architect of the apps and services that help connect people around the world with live experiences. He has been developing mobile solutions since the early days of the PDA and is currently in search of his next community project.

Android Search and Refinement Design Patterns
Greg Nudelman

Android is Google. And Search is 3 out of 4 base pairs of Google's DNA. How does Android 4.x deal with Search and Refinement? In this interactive session we'll review:

  • The latest practical design patterns for search and refinement and lots of examples of how to apply them to your project.
  • How pogo-sticking affects your design and why Android 4.x implementation of YouTube is so much better than the iOS7 version.
  • Simple, yet powerful Parallel Architecture design pattern that will help your customers find your content and products easily, every time, while also providing an advanced user interface for customers who need it.
  • How to avoid the pitfalls of common anti-patterns, such as creating a completely different UI for viewing and refining the same data, which results in adding multiple, and ultimately confusing, ways to find the same content.
  • What's just around the corner for Android search.

Greg show a case study redesign of the TripAdvisor's search interface using his lightweight, inexpensive, sticky-notes agile design method, which also creates a paper prototype ready for usability testing and give away two copies of his new book: Android Design Patterns: Interaction Design Solutions for Developers, Wiley, 2013, as prizes to top participants!

Greg Nudelman is a design strategist, Fourtune 500 advisor and CEO of Design Caffeine. For the past 15 years he has helped craft cross-platform digital experiences for companies of all sizes, spanning from eBay to IBM and PayPal. His latest book is Android Design Patterns: Interaction Design Solutions for Developers.
