The UC Davis Food Science Graduate Student Association is hosting a raffle fundraiser in which the lucky winner will have the opportunity to select five friends to join them in a practical brewing science exercise in the company of legendary brewing science professor Charlie Bamforth who will discuss and inspire you while reminiscing about his unparalleled career in brewing.
The event will be held at the August A. Busch III Brewing Laboratory which houses a 1.5 barrel (40 gallon) pilot brewery. The winner (and team) will have the option of brewing a beer designed by Professor Bamforth or their dream beer.* Participants will be provided the materials to brew Professor Bamforth's beer.**

Participants are required to be a minimum age of 21.

Dr. Charlie Bamforth is the Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Malting & Brewing Sciences at UC Davis. He has been part of the brewing industry for thirty-four years. Dr. Bamforth is formerly Deputy Director-General of Brewing Research International and Research Manager and Quality Assurance Manager of Bass Brewers. He is an Honorary Professor in the School of Biosciences at the University of Nottingham, England and was previously Visiting Professor of Brewing at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland. Charlie is a Fellow of the Institute of Brewing & Distilling, Fellow of the Society of Biology and Fellow of the International Academy of Food Science and Technology. Bamforth is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Society of Brewing Chemists, is on the editorial boards of several other journals and has published innumerable papers, articles and books on beer and brewing – and also written prolifically on soccer. He was described as one of the country’s most intriguing professors in the October 2010 issue of Playboy magazine. Dr. Bamforth’s latest contribution, “Beer Is Proof God Loves Us: Reaching for the Soul of Beer and Brewing”, looks at beer from a cultural, religious and personal viewpoint. In 2012 the students at UC Davis voted his FST3 course Introduction to Beer and Brewing the number one General Education course on campus.
* If participants would like to brew their dream beer, they must provide and get pre-approved the additional materials that they would like to utilize in the brewery.
** Following the brewing process participants will be provided 1 five gallon fermentation vessels (glass carboy), airlocks, stoppers, and yeast to take home. Participants will also be allowed to bring additional fermentation vessels to capture wort produced during the brewing science exercise.
