An intrepid spirit characterizes BMV’s season-opening concert “Breakthroughs,” beginning with the landside longings of the underworld ogre of Andy Vores’ Umberhulk. Mezzo-soprano Krista River joins the ensemble for Harbison’s Mirabai Songs, a sensual depiction of the rebellious 16th-century Indian poet and mystic Mirabai. The title of Peter Lieberson’s fleet septet Raising the Gaze evokes a zen-like state. The three Northeast Semi-finalists of the Rapido!® Composition Contest present the breakthrough results of their intensive 14-day compositional sojourn.
