"One hundred years ago there were an estimated 100,000 Asian elephants in Thailand alone. Today, their numbers have declined to 3,500–5,000 due to a multitude of threats ranging from the desire for ivory to the reduction of forest space. The notion of extinction is no longer just a concern; it is the new reality." --BLES website

"It may be easy to dismiss the enchantment of elephants and identification with them as sentimental indulgence but it would be a mistake. Understanding our species' elephilia, and all the other aspects of our enduring relationship with elephant species, may shed light on our current urgent and enormous predicament." -- Eric Scigliano
