Please join us for Book-A-Rama, a community-university book drive and inaugural service event! Book-A-Rama is providing books to local and rural elementary school students in need. Winthrop students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members are invited to volunteer.
WHAT IS BOOK-A-RAMA? The goal for Book-a-Rama is to collect 5,000 new or gently loved children’s books to be distributed to high-need elementary schools within Rock Hill School District 3 and eight additional school districts (York, Clover, Fort Mill, Chester, Lancaster, Fairfield, Cherokee, and Union) for current and summer reading initiatives. This project will result in greater access to print materials in children’s homes and provide supplemental reading material for upcoming programs to prevent reading loss during the summer months. Winthrop students, faculty and staff, alumni, retirees, business and community partners are collecting book contributions through the end of March. These books will be brought to the Lois Rhames Center on March 27th for sorting and distribution.
WHAT WILL VOLUNTEERS DO? On Thursday, March 27, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., volunteers will sort, clean and pack donated books according to reading level for distribution to community children in need and celebrate the value of reading with local children. Volunteers may sign up for one or more shifts. Can't make the entire shift? Please indicate the time you can participate when registering. Volunteer check-in is at the Lois Rhame West Center.
Winthrop University and Rock Hill Reads, together with Rock Hill Schools and the Early Learning Partnership of York County, created Book-a-Rama, a community book drive and reading celebration in honor of Jamie Comstock’s Inauguration as Winthrop’s 10th president.
*Book donations will be accepted at Book-A-Rama on March 27 at the door.
