Welcome to Startup Weekend Bogotá, English Edition!!! Startup Weekends are 54-hour events designed to provide superior experiential education for entrepreneurship enthusiasts. This will be the sixth Startup Weekend event held in Bogotá, and the first that will be held in its entirety in English (i.e. the pitches and presentations will be delivered in that language). Why? Because we believe that this is a language that is increasingly important and necessary for local entrepreneurs, especially for those who want to take their ideas to a global market, or whose goal is to eventually find resources and investment in places like Silicon Valley or through initiatives like Startup Chile and Mass Challenge.
Beginning with Friday night pitches and continuing through team formation, business plan development, and basic prototype/minimum viable product (MVP) development, Startup Weekends finish on Sunday night, with demos and presentations in front of a panel of judges.
Participants should create working startups during the event and will be able to meet, interact and collaborate with like-minded individuals outside of their daily networks. All teams hear talks by experienced entrepreneurs. In addition to entrepreneurs, there are industry leaders and business executives who act as mentors, and who give valuable feedback to the teams. The weekend is centered around action, innovation, and education.
Whether you are looking for feedback on an idea, a co-founder, specific skill sets, or a team to help you execute, Startup Weekends are the perfect environment in which to test your idea and take the first steps towards launching your own startup.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS – FAQs
Who can participate in this event?
Startup Weekend attendees’ backgrounds are roughly 50% technical (developers, coders, designers) and 50% business/other (marketing, finance, domain experts and others). What unites all attendees is a common interest in entrepreneurship: whether a serial entrepreneur or new to the startup scene, every attendee is interested in forming and working with a like-minded, motivated and skilled team with the goal of starting –in one weekend– what will be down the road a sustainable, profitable, influential business. If this sounds like you, this is the event for you!
I don’t speak perfect English. Can I still participate?
You don't need to be a native English speaker in order to participate. You should have good English listening and conversational skills, though, but we’re not expecting you to necessarily have a native command of the language. Native English speakers are also welcome, of course. As a matter of fact, through this event, we want to promote the interaction between locals and people from other countries who currently reside in Bogotá and who have an interest in entrepreneurship.
Will all the Startup Weekend events in Bogotá be in English from now on?
Not at all! This is a special edition of the event, that’s all. Throughout the world, there are SW events that have special themes, like “Food Innovation” (in Berlin), “E-Commerce” (in Tokyo), and there are also SW events that are focused on specific segments of the population, like university events, women’s events, veterans’ events, and so on. This particular English Edition of SW Bogotá wants to get participants to practice their English skills, to meet persons from different countries, and to think about global products and services.
Our flagship SW Bogotá (in Spanish) will be held in November of this year during the Global Entrepreneurship Week, so you can also participate in that event.
Why do I pay?
This is a non-for-profit event. The majority of your ticket price goes towards paying the meals, snacks, and drinks that we provide over the weekend. In fact, ticket sales rarely cover even such basic bottom-line costs! We rely on local sponsorships and on volunteer organizers, mentors, speakers and judges who donate their time, in order to help keep ticket prices low while keeping the value of the event high.
