All photographs stop time, but to capture humans in motion takes preparation, anticipation, and perfect timing. This workshop will teach you the skills necessary for all photography of high-speed motion, whether in dance, sports, or just children playing energetically!
We will photograph graceful and astonishingly athletic dancers during a class and performance, using professional high-speed strobe lights provided by Samy's Camera. No experience with professional strobes is required - we will set them up for you - simply having a strong interest in dance and movement, as well as comfort in following fast movement with your camera, maintaining focus, and responding to the peak moment of the action!
This course will take place at a dance studio from 3pm to 8pm. George will first give a short lecture to prepare you on how to capture action, and explain the equipment we will be using. Then, students will take turns photographing the talented performers. After the workshop, participants will edit their best photos, and submit them for a workshop web page - that we might all enjoy the images and learn from each other!
Please be prepared by mastering handling your DSLR in manual exposure, changing exposures while following the action in the viewfinder, and controlling your camera's auto-focusing behavior. Use of a zoom in the middle- to longer-focal lengths (50mm to 100mm) is encouraged, though fixed focal-length lenses might give better autofocus performance! Please shoot in the RAW format, and bring back-up batteries and memory cards.
