All photographs stop time, but to capture humans in motion takes preparation, anticipation, and perfect timing. This workshop will teach you the skills necessary for all photography of high-speed motion, whether in dance, sports, or just children playing energetically!
In this workshop we will practice anticipating the action, follow-focusing, and capturing the precise peak moments on dancers as they spin and twirl through the air. We will light the performance with strobes, and participants will take turns photographing with these extreme-high-power and ultra-short-flash-duration lights!
Strobes freeze movement, while long shutter speeds depict movement in space over time, as blurs…. why not try to capture both in one exposure? Careful light placement and precise exposures allow one to create a "double exposure" in one frame - dancers frozen in motion by Profoto extremely-short-duration strobes, with trails created by their movement recorded during a long exposure, of 1/4 second. Sophisticated uses of color gels and custom white balance settings in camera further separate the sharp from the blur, with 2 opposing color schemes. This workshop will help you master all these advanced techniques, while creating stunning, unique images!
This course will take place at a dance studio from 3pm to 7pm. George will first give a short lecture to prepare you on how to capture action, and explain the equipment we will be using. Then, students will take turns photographing the talented preformers. After the workshop, participants will edit their best photos, and submit them for a workshop web page - that we might all enjoy the images and learn from each other!
Please be prepared by mastering handling your DSLR in manual exposure, changing exposures while following the action in the viewfinder, and controlling your camera's auto-focusing behavior. Use of a zoom in the middle- to longer-focal lengths (50mm to 100mm) is encouraged, though fixed focal-length lenses might give better autofocus performance! Please shoot in the RAW format, and bring back-up batteries and memory cards.
