All photographs stop time, but to capture humans flying through the air takes preparation, anticipation, and perfect timing!
We will practice anticipating the action, follow-focusing, and capturing the precise peak moments, on acrobats swinging from trapeze to trapeze, high in the air, at the New York Trapeze School, in the center of the Santa Monica Pier!
This workshop will teach you the skills necessary for all photography of high-speed motion, whether in dance, sports, or just children playing energetically!
In addition, we will explore the world of high-powered/sort-flash duration professional strobe lighting - using Samy's Profoto lights - and create stunning images of frozen flyers against rich sunset skies, and against blurred amusement park lights!
We will photograph the "graduation" performance of the Spring class, performing in a variety of fun costumes, while flying from trapeze to trapeze, some 30 feet above the Pier! We will light this trapeze performance with 4 Profoto strobes, and participants will take turns photographing with these extreme-high-power and ultra-short-flash-duration lights! We will meet at the New York Trapeze School, in the center of the Santa Monica Pier, at 6PM on Saturday, June 22, to practice our skills, and be ready to start documenting the performances, from 7PM until almost 9PM. At the end of the performance we will have a small meeting at Maria Sol Restaurant on the pier, to review one participant's images, and discuss the issues encountered, as well as ideas for post-processing. One week later, you'll submit your best images for an online class gallery, and receive individual feedback from George.
This will be a workshop packed with information about balancing strobes and sunlight, and photography of the split-second, unique motion of bodies flying through space!
Please be prepared by mastering handling your DSLR in manual exposure, changing exposures while following the action in the viewfinder, and controlling your camera's auto-focusing behavior. Use of a zoom in the middle- to longer-focal lengths (50mm to 135mm) is encouraged, though fixed focal-length lenses might give better autofocus performance! Please shoot in the RAW format, and bring back-up batteries and memory cards!
