This lesson series runs for a total of four weeks. We'll meet on September 4, 18, 25 and October 2 from 7-8pm.
**SCHEDULE CHANGE: Note that we are skipping Sept. 11 and instead continuing into October**
Brand-new to blues? Welcome! These classes will give you everything you need to get going on the social floor. We'll be exploring blues movement and the lead/follow dynamic in a safe and friendly environment. Over the course of our four weeks together you'll learn a solid foundation in the fundamentals of blues dance and movement.
Are you a returning blues dancer looking to improve your dancing? Welcome! These classes will improve your basic blues movements and we'll add in some more complex movements for the returning dancers. There will be a focus on dancing within the partnership and expanding your dancing with new tools and possibilities.
Are you a returning student? If you took the series in June or July take $10 off this time around.
Taught by Victor Lane and Rosalind Diaz.
What people are saying about the June series...
"This class series has been fantastic. I love the way Rosalind explains things. Her use of analogies and imagery makes it much easier to understand and execute the steps. I love the atmosphere in the class and the welcoming safe environment makes it easy to practice blues dance."
"Perfect for people like me who think (thought?) of themselves as non-dancers...I started out feeling like a non-dancing not-too-coordinated introvert, was really surprised to have *fun* at social dance. "
Here's what we'll be up to in September:
Week 1: Foundations
The first day will be spent working on learning clear foundations of blues dance. We'll establish a basic connection and pulse, then vary this pulse by adding other rhythms. We'll also add in creative variations and patterns from the closed position, all while focusing on leading from your core. You'll be ready to dance by the end of the night!
Week 2: Gettin' a Move On
In the second week we’ll discuss different ways to travel around the floor with confidence. We'll begin working on turn technique and cover the side pass. We'll introduce close embrace and how it helps moving around the floor. Finally, we'll introduce the concept of floorcraft, how to keep yourself and your partner safe on a crowded dance floor.
Week 3: Dancing With the Music
What’s your favorite kind of music? Slow and soulful, gritty, sultry, sassy, carefree, bursting with energy? In this class we'll learn how to dance to all of the above! We'll explore a range of different styles, moves and techniques, all of which are inspired by different musical styles.
Week 4: Wrapping It Up
During the last class everyone will have the opportunity to review material from previous classes and get feedback from each other. Questions are encouraged! We'll wrap up with some lead-and-follow role trading. We’ll work on some nifty moves which allow us to trade roles in the middle of a dance. We'll also play with using subtle muscle tone to trade the lead and follow between the dancers. All of this will be put together with your other skills to make role switching smooth, connected, and musical.
