Dear Active Duty Military Service Member and Families:
We cordially invite you to attend the 2013 national launch of Blue Star Museums, to be held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. This media event announces the fourth season of Blue Star Museums, which offers FREE museum admission at hundreds of museums nationwide to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day, May 27, 2013 through Labor Day, September 2, 2013. This will be our launch event for the 2013 Season! This year's season promises to be better than ever with well more than 1,800 museums across the United States participating (and counting)!
On Tuesday, May 21 at 10:30 A.M., Blue Star Families and the National Endowment for the Arts will invite members of the media and military families to the Smithsonian American Art Museum (americanart.si.edu) for press conference and FREE museum tour for military families. Please RSVP on this website, or call the program manager below, if you wish to attend and participate in this event. We have a limited number of guests that can be accommodated. We are asking that all active duty military members show their esprit de corps by wearing their military uniform and Represent their Service! We encourage all military family members (spouses and children) who can join us for this special event to do so as it is dedicated to YOU - Our Military Service Members and their Families! We will have a few special guests joining us so the opportunity to be a part of this very special launch event - is something - you don't want to miss!
The Smithsonian American Art Museum, the nation's first collection of American art, is an unparalleled record of the American experience. The collection captures the aspirations, character and imagination of the American people across four centuries., which has one of the worlds largest and most inclusive collections of art, from colonial period to the present, made in the United States. The museum has more than 7,000 artists represented in the collection, which contains the largest collection of the New Deal era; a collection of contemporary craft, American impressionist paintings, and masterpieces from the Gilded Age; photography, modern folk art, works by African American and Latino artists, images of western expansion and realist art from the first half of the twentieth century. The Smithsonian American Art Museum's main building, a National Historic Landmark is located in Washington, D.C.'s downtown cultural district, has been renovated with expanded permanent-collection galleries and public spaces.
In addition, the Museum regularly features major exhibitions from around the world, as well as an extensive year-round schedule of supporting cultural and educational programs for children and adults.
