Winemaker Enrique Tirado will present a component tasting of wines from each of the 7 parcels that are carefully blended each year to make Don Melchor. Don Melchor is a world-class, single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the Upper Maipo Valley of Chile. Sitting at the base of the Andes mountains, the famous Puente Alto vineyard has been classified into 7 parcels that each have a distinct personality.

Fruit from the 6 parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon and single parcel of Cabernet Franc are vinified separately to be later blended by Enrique and long-time collaborators, Eric and Jacques Boissenot.

Participants in this interactive tasting class will have the unique opportunity to taste wine from each of the parcels and listen to Enrique talk about the blending process. He will also be presenting the new vintage release, Don Melchor 2010. Not yet available in the stores, this new vintage has just received a 95 point rating from Wine Spectator.

Even if you're not a numbers person, the numbers on this soon-to-be $100 a bottle star are impressive, especially the summer school value of this tasting class + dinner.

Winemaker Enrique Tirado has a long and illustrious history at Viña Concha y Toro. After joining the company in 1993 to lead its premium brands, he was appointed head winemaker of super-premium and ultra-premium labels in 1997, including the company’s icon wine, Don Melchor. In 1999, Tirado’s uncanny winemaking sensitivity and tireless research into different terroirs led to his appointment as sole winemaker of Don Melchor, sourced from the renowned Puente Alto vineyard in the Andean foothills on the north bank of the Maipo River. Every vintage of Don Melchor under his guidance has ranked among the finest wines of the year from Chile and has elevated Don Melchor to a privileged place among the world’s finest wines, garnering Tirado an enviable reputation as one of Chile’s most respected winemakers.


Fueled by his passion for the Puente Alto vineyard Enrique Tirado conducted the first study of soil and terroir in Chile in 2002, in conjunction with one of the most prestigious academic centers in France, the Institut National Agronomique Paris-Grignon (INA P-G). Tirado’s exacting, ongoing research into terroir management combined with the adoption of new vinification technologies has allowed him to achieve the best expression, finesse and elegance from Cabernet Sauvignon.

Every year, the final blend of Don Melchor is determined with one of Bordeaux’s most highly esteemed consultants, Jacques Boissenot. It is a moment when two worlds reunite vintage after vintage, in a collaboration that dates back to the first release of Don Melchor. According to Tirado: “Don Melchor’s style captures the complexity and finesse expressed through the perfect balance of the stony Puente Alto soil, the Andean breeze, the generous Maipo Valley climate, and the twenty-five years the vines have taken to produce their best grapes.”

Boston Wine School

A lot of people have never been to a Boston Wine School class before, so let me tell you what to expect.

First of all, we are a guaranteed 100% snob-free zone. No matter who you are. No matter how much you know about wine. We know how to make wine interesting and interactive for everyone.
Classes are small — usually 15 students max — and usually start with sparkling wine, then bread, cheese, olives and antipasto. Expect to taste 6-8 specially selected wines. Weekend classes include dinner, featuring vegetarian options.
