Southern Gurl Productions is proud to present a documentary that offers a behind-the- scenes view of contemporary, self-published, African-American writers’ as they navigate life from self-publishing to film.

 

‘BLACK AND WRITE’ exposes the pros and cons of bookstore placement, the impacts of technology in publishing, the elusive gateway to Hollywood and pays homage to the Black Writers Reunion and Conference--a conference that shaped the lives of many authors over the past 12 years. 

 

The film features Author/ Publisher Zane Strebor, Actor/Director/Producer Eriq La Salle (ER), Television Executive Producer Bentley Kyle Evans, Screenwriter/Author Antwone Fisher, National Award-winning author Reshonda Tate-Billingsley and a host of dynamic self-published authors.

Dr. Monica "Moe" Anderson is a versatile journalist, author, motivational speaker, and practicing Doctor of Dental Surgery. She has written five books in three different genres. Her debut novel, When A Sistah's Fed Up, was an Essence and Dallas Morning News Bestseller. She is the author of two additional novels: Sinphony and I Stand Accused. She has also authored two non-fiction books: Black English Vernacular and Mom, Are We There Yet? and contributed to three anthologies. She is a graduate of Baylor University and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry.


In 1996, she became the first African-American columnist for the Arlington Star-Telegram. She was a freelance, weekly columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, a leading Texas newspaper, for seven years. Her editorials have appeared in various newspapers across the country including: the Seattle Times, the San Jose Mercury News, the Courier-Journal of Louisville, KY, the Minnesota Viking Update, the Cincinnati Bengal Update, and the Marshall News Messenger. In 1999, the staff of the Fort Worth Weekly named her "Best Columnist" in Tarrant County. Currently, she is a freelance columnist for drbicuspid.com and she gives frequent keynotes for university, corporate, civic, and church groups. She lives in Austin, Texas. She is the Founder and President of Austin's Black Newcomers Association, a community service project to help new residents quickly connect with existing resources and organizations.

C.Mikki was born and raised in Shreveport, LA, where she knew as a young child exactly what she wanted to do when she grew up. Be a Writer and a Director.  In 2010, C. Mikki released her first novel, "Men and Sex - Power, Pleasure, Pain." She has written for various online magazines, providing sex and relationship advice that is thought provoking and realistic. After 12 years of a career in recruiting, C.Mikki now devotes her life to realizing her dream. "If you really want to do it, you will find the time. Time is never an excuse." C. Mikki is currently working on her debut documentary film, "Black and Write." A film that will explore the challenges of black authors and the publishing business. She resides in Texas with her husband and two sons.
