Birth Justice Retreat  
9 am-6:30 pm on Saturday, May 4th 2013
 
On the weekend of International Midwifery Day, birthworkers and health care workers from near and far are invited to join us in Micanopy for a Saturday retreat. It will be an opportunity to connect and share skills, to address and discuss important social justice issues in birthwork, and to relax & reflect-  enjoy the meditation gardens, pool, and hot tub!

This retreat is open for birthworkers (midwives, nurses, doulas, obstetricians), other health care workers, and all who are interested in working towards social justice in birth- or "Birth Justice"*.

REGISTRATION
 
EARLY BIRD DEAL:  
Retreat participants who pre-register before April 20th will receive an early-bird deal of $50
 
After April 20th, the price will be $70
 
The fee for the retreat includes breakfast, enjoying the hot tub/pool/ meditation gardens, attending the workshops, a complimentary massage, and lunch.  (Dinner is on your own) 
 
For those who wish to stay overnight, there are 7 beds available at the retreat center for an additional $25/ night.  If you would prefer to camp, there is nearby free camping- let us know if you are interested.

Childcare will be provided By Shoog McDaniel for a small additional fee (sliding scale)  
Shoog McDaniel is a child care provider in the Gainesville Community.
They have been involved in some form of child care for the last 20
years, with extensive training in CPR and first aid.  Shoog has worked
in child care centers in the past, but now primarily work in-home.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Intro to Birth Justice with Abigail Fletcher

An introduction to injustices in Birth, and the Birth Justice Movement.   Participants will explore how racism, classism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia effect pregnant and birthing parents.  

Massage Workshop for Pregnancy and Labor with Tyra Haslam

 

As women we tend to lend a helping hand and are always busy putting ourselves last in line. This Course will enhance your awareness of Prenatal Massage and common conditions associated with pregnancy. We will study alternative ways to maintain our bodies through pregnancy, labor, and post partum. We will study ways to help others and self-care techniques that mothers to can do for a little relief. Participants will understand the physical and emotional benefits of prenatal massage, understand contraindications to massage therapy during pregnancy, have a basic knowledge of pressure points to help induce labor, and be able to perform basic massage techniques.

Communication Skill Building with Heart Phoenix

Our time together will be a soft introduction to NVC (Nonviolent Communication) including tips on how to communicate effectively without blaming, demanding, shaming, judging.  We will highlight feelings, needs and the power of empathy for self and others.

 

Flow and Release-  Yoga with Teonia


We will focus on movement and postures that mimic the fluidity of breathe to facilitate our bodies' intuitive response to release tension.  This experience will draw from the essence of Vinyasa, Kemetic, and Afrikan Yoga practices 

 

 

Birth Justice Discussion Group 1    (for people of color)  with Teiona Burton 

"Us Lifting Us-Solutions that Unite and Develop a Sustainable Community"

This workshop’s aim is to gather African-Americans and other people of color to discuss our history and experience in the healthcare system.  This discussion will compile solutions to navigating the system and regarding birth justice, we will seek out ways to better reach our expectant moms and their families.  This dialogue’s objective is to develop ways to implement these solutions, creating a healthy, sustainable and prosperous community.

 

Birth Justice Discussion Group 2  (for white people)  with Moji Yai and Diedre Houchen

 

This workshop will discuss reparation of disparities across the lines of race and the sustainable unified growth of our community's health and well being.  

 

 

 

PRESENTER BIOS

 

Teonia Burton is a Health Educator, Yoga Instructor, Doula and aspiring midwifery student.  She received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Health Education specializing in Community Health at the University of Florida.  She is also owner of Divine Wisdom Birth and Wellness Services and a member of Gainesville Doulas and Co.  Her interest in community develop and economic self-sufficiency for people of African descent led her to become a member of the All African People Development and Empowerment Project where she gained knowledge on strategies to improve the conditions of Africans on the continent and the Diasporas .  She currently works as a Patient Care Assistant on the Mother & Baby Unit.   

 

Abigail Fletcher is a home birth midwife in Gainesville. They are also a co-founder of "Spectrum"- a group of trans people and allies striving to improve trans and gender non-conforming people's access to quality health care. (spectrumgainesville.tumblr.com) Abigail is a part of the Birth Justice Movement, and is a board member of "Mobile Midwife"- a non-profit in Miami whose vision is to make midwifery care accessible to all- especially Black, Brown, immigrant, indigenous, queer, transgender, low-income and other marginalized communities. Tyra Haslam has been a Massage Therapist since 2009. She was trained at Southeastern School of Neuromuscular Massage. She used her techniques in massage to help her finish her Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Queens University of Charlotte. She has additional certification in Thai Massage, Hot Stone Therapy, Reiki, and Pre-natal massage. Tyra encourages her clients to be participants in their healing process and as a practitioner promotes harmony of the mind, body, and spirit through nurturing and therapeutic touch. Tyra is currently employed at Massage Envy Spa as a Director of Therapeutic Servies. She is passionate about the positive effects of the therapy on the body and mind. After receiving her certification in prenatal massage, Tyra has taken on a new love for Nurturing Mothers and their babies. She has from her own experience seen the importance of bodywork during pregnancy, labor, and post partum. Tyra intentionally creates a massage unique to every individual and her serene approach offers harmony, balance, and ease to a busy life. 

Diedre Houchen is a doctoral student researching Black education and educational organizing. Ms. Houchen also teaches Race and Education at the University of Florida

 

Heart Phoenix is the Board President of the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding, which was founded in honor of her son.  For the past five years, Heart has been the Executive Director of The Florida School of Traditional Midwifery and continues to serve as Vice President of the Board.   As a mother, grandmother and vegan for almost 35 years, her commitment to nonviolence to earth and all sentient beings has been the center point of her life and activism.    She is an international facilitator of workshops focusing on gender healing, youth empowerment, personal growth, breathwork and deep ecology.   

 

Moji Yai is a childbirth consultant and preschool teacher, she has informal education in race relations in the United States especially pertaining to birthing and education.  Ms. Yai is founder of Gainesville Doulas & Co an organization aiming to increase midwifery care model for families of color.
