You are invited to attend ...

BIL 2010

BIL is an ad-hoc conference for people changing the world in big ways. It's a place for passionate thinkers and doers to come together to energize, brainstorm, and take action.

The 3rd annual BIL is just around the corner, with little more than two weeks until great minds self-organize and light the world on fire with ideas!

We would especially like to thank Microsoft for their generous donation as well as all of the attendees who have donated.  You make this possible.

There are a few announcements to make.

Change in Date/Format:

The date format has changed: the 'Talking' portion is Friday and half of Saturday.  What we're envisioning is ideas to be spread during a fire-hose of 20 minute talks, with Saturday evening and Sunday is for smaller groups with common interests to organize their own adventures.  We'll have a whiteboard/wiki with nearby activities for people to self-organize.

Friday, Feb 12 - Sun Feb 14, 2010

Talks: Friday, Feb 12, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Talks: Saturday, Feb 13, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
1:30 p.m. - 2:15 p.m. mingle in the sculpture garden

BILxOutside:  Saturday, February 13, 2 p.m. till Late
BILxOutside: Sunday, February 14, 10 a.m. till the End of Time

We have a venue!

The Museum of Latin American Art

628 Alamitos Avenue
Long Beach, CA 90802-1513

The venue currently has a capacity of 500 people. We'll probably fill up, so remember to donate to support increased capacity.

BIL wants to enable self-organizing idea-spreading, and will be providing a mechanism for people to organize spin-off events.  Instead of sitting still in a room participants will be heading into the surrounding environment in small groups on Saturday evening and Sunday.  There are a lot of nearby adventures -- Long Beach Aquarium, Queen Mary, Whale Watching, hiking and more.

Speaker Curation:

At BIL in the main room there will be a total of 20 speakers with 20 minutes apiece.  The speaker following will be waiting for the speaker onstage to finish.  If the speaker is not there, they will miss their time slot and all times will move up one.  We will be updating who is speaking next via our Twitter feed and moBIL, our upcoming mobile app.  We'll post specifics before the event.

This year we plan to have a voting process, because we are anticipating having too many talks to try to organize them the day-of.  We will use the votes to determine the 20 most popular speakers who will get to choose their times in advance.  Voting will close Wednesday February 10, at 5 p.m.

Our video sponsor TechZulu.com has volunteered to video the talks.  They will be available via livestream.

In short, BIL is an open, self-organizing, emergent, arts, science, society and technology unconference held near the famous TED Conference during the trailing weekend of.

History & Roots

Organizers of the first BIL Conference

The first BIL Conference

The concept of the BIL Conference started in late November 2007, when Cody Marx Bailey proposed the idea of going out to Monterey, CA and crashing the TED Conference to Todd Huffman and Bill Erickson. The idea was to simply get a group of people to make the pilgrimage and hang around the area the TED’sters would be schmoozing at night. As the group quickly snowballed from a handful of people to nearly thirty in a matter of weeks, the decision to hold our own unconference seemed, well, obvious.

Todd Huffman and Reichart von Wolfsheild proposed the name BIL, as it was catchy, short and best of all, unclaimed. It also had a bit of comedic value to take away some of the seriousness as it referenced the most excellent Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

Most of the planning was done through the open-to-the-public wiki hosted by PBWiki. This allowed anyone interested in making something cool happen able to contribute. Soon, Alexis Bright, Tyler Emerson (along with the Singularity Institute), Emi Joy, and Simone Syed would begin to play a major part as the potetial attendance neared closer and closer to the fire marshalls limit on the space that was reserved.

The week of TED 2008, the number of RSVPs had eclipsed the space limitations and the group was forced to spread the word that we could not take in any more attendees. BIL at that point had grown larger than anyone had expected.

BIL 2009 was held on the campus of California State University at Long Beach and with over 100 speakers and 500 participants, doubling the size the previous year.
