Event Details

Basic Bike Maintenance

Description:

Learn how to maintain your bicycle! The four classes in this course will cover the following topics: changing a flat tire, introduction to drive systems and rear derailleurs, brake systems overhaul, and introduction to bearings systems and front hub overhaul. Students will be performing the maintenance themselves, on their own bicycles, after a short instruction and demonstration. This is a basic course, and some bicycle types may be outside of the scope of the course. However, the course does reach a level of detail at which students who are intending to expand their knowledge of bicycles find it helpful to do some light note-taking during lecture time.

Class Goals:

Students will come out of this course with the ability to tend to the most common maintenance requirements of their bicycle.

Prerequisites:

Students must be at least 18 years of age -- otherwise, all you need is the desire to learn!

Materials Provided:

All relevant tools and equipment will be provided, as well as lubricants and rags etc.

What to Bring:

Your bike, replacement parts if necessary (check with instructor), and clothes you don't mind getting black bike grease on.

Instructor Biography:

Seven of Nine

“Seven” as she’s commonly known, has learned her bicycle maintenance skills through a combination of Broadway Bicycle School training, and spending inordinate amounts of time around SCUL headquarters (a positive bicycle chopper gang). Seven maintains a small fleet of “normal” bicycles, has built and maintained her own modified bicycles, and she likes to read bicycle repair manuals for kicks. Seven enjoys maintenance best when her SCUL comrades get together and ask her two or three “how do I…” questions at once. She’s also keen on hot yoga, meditation, making electronics go, and treasures playtime with friends.
