WE'RE STILL HERE AND GOING STRONG! JOIN THE FUN IN 2016!
A truly unique experience, the Beyond The Sock Workshop grants attendees the chance to learn the techniques used to bring some of the most beloved puppet characters in television and film to life. At Beyond The Sock you get hands on instruction in the art and craft of building and performing with hand-and-rod puppets along with the chance to practice your craft in a professional environment. Attendees also get the chance to interact with fellow puppet builders, performers and fans.
Beyond The Sock brings you some of the best instructors in the business. Design and construction sessions are conducted by master puppet builder Pasha Romanowski, the owner of Project Puppet.com and the creator of multiple puppets for New Zealand TV's The Moe Show and Imagine with Rufus as well as WOOT's KidFoot. Manipulation and performance sessions are conducted by two puppet performance veterans; Peter Linz (Disney's The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted films and ABC's The Muppets tv series, Sesame Street, Between The Lions, It's a Big, Big World) and Noel MacNeal (Bear in the Big Blue House, Between the Lions, Sesame Street, The Puzzle Place, HBO's Last Week Tonight)).

FAQs - VITAL INFORMATION FOR ATTEDNEES:
Are there any physical considerations for potential Beyond The Sock attendees?
Puppetry performance is a form of art that is demanding both physically and mentally. Attendees must stand for long periods of time with their arms raised above their heads; frequently watching monitors placed at odd locations. As obvious as it may sound working this way requires a fair amount of discipline and stamina.
What will I actually learn? Is this workshop really worth it?
Attendees are trained in the same methods and techniques (manipulation, movement, acting through the puppet) used by the top performers in the industry as taught by some of the top performers in the industry. Typically this level of instruction is only available by auditioning with and being chosen for a major television or film production.
Our design and build sessions are led by a master puppet builder. Attendees are led through how to craft a camera-ready character of professional quality which is far beyond the quality of pre-made puppets you might find in retail or online stores. Commissioning a custom-built puppet of similar size and quality would cost many times more.
Our past attendees have included actors, educators, voice artists and current professional puppet performers and designers. They all seemed to think the workshop was worthwhile. But we do understand everyone has different goals and priorities.
Is there an ID requirement or an age limit for the workshop?
Yes. Due to the physically demanding nature of the workshop attendees must generally be 18 years of age by the first day (June, 7th 2016). However we recognize there may be exceptional young performers with a passion and talent for puppetry. In extremely rare cases we can make exceptions. These instances are decided on an individual basis and only as space allows. You can contact us with specific questions via email at: firstname.lastname@example.org
Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
Once again, feel free to contact us via email at: email@example.com
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
Please bring either your printed ticket or your downloaded ticket on your mobile device to the first day of the workshop so we can make your check in process as quick and efficient as possible. Help us help you!
Can I just wait to register on the first day of the workshop?
Because of the need to order the correct amount of puppet building supplies and secure adequate classroom space all attendees must pre-register.
What is the refund policy?
Refunds for the full registration amount may be requested until April 17th, 2016. After that date refunds for 50% of the registration amount may be requested until May 27th, 2016. Because of facility and materials costs no refunds will be given after this date. Please note all refunds will incur a $150.00 processing and materials fee.
What are my parking options during the event?
Guest parking will be available for the duration of the workshop to attendees who request but only if requested on the first day of the workshop during check-in.
What housing options are available near the event site?
Discounted hotel rates for Beyond the Sock attendees will be available at two of our partner hotels in Denton, Texas. Attendees are also eligible for on-campus housing at our host venue; the University of North Texas. Details for these accommodations will be announced October 5th.
What can / can't I bring to the workshop?
We love visitors and pets! But they are not able to attend the workshop with you. Only fully registered attendees, workshop instructors, coordinators and staff may participate in workshop sessions and performances.
We also ask that no video recording of the actual design / build and performance training sessions be done due to copyright and guild agreements we have in place with our instructors. Video recording outside of instructional sessions is allowed on a limited basis. Attendees may take still photos. Please keep in mind any recording or still photos must not disrupt other attendees.
Each previous year class has had a lot of fun bringing their existing puppets, puppet designs and photos to share with their fellow attendees.
Do I need prior puppeteering or puppet building experience?
In order to fully immerse yourself in the workshop you need basic fabric craft skills such as cutting, glueing fabric and basic stitching (or be able to learn quickly). For performance you should have a basic understanding of hand and rod puppetry and a basic grasp of stage or on-camera performance. However all of our session leads are not only among the best in the industry but also excellent instructors.
Please note: buidling sessions also require handling sharp objects such as needles, hobby knives, and scissors.
I'm an alumni of UNT or the spouse / child / other relative or friend of a UNT alumn, faculty or staff member. Will I receive a discount on registration?
All registration fees go directly to the cost of hosting the workshop. As such no discounts outside of student registration will be made.
My child is a high school student and is very interested in a career in puppet performance. Can he / she attend at the student rate?
Student attendee registrations are very limited. Therefore the student rate is only for currently enrolled college or university students in good standing. The status of University of North Texas students will be verified by the workshop staff via the UNT Registrar's office. College or university students outside of the UNT system who wish to attend must submit enrollment verification and a letter of recommendation.
For more information please contact the Beyond The Sock Coordinating Staff at: firstname.lastname@example.org
Will there be DVDs, Video On-Demand or Live Streaming of the workshop sessions?
The agreements we have with our instructors prevent us from any utilizing any of these distribution methods. To get the most out of the workshop it is really best to attend in person. Plus you will benefit the most from our hands on instruction.
