Best Practices for Special Events
We all want our fundraising events to be loved by our supporters, to make money, and not to drain our staff or volunteers. Experience shows that it is not easy to accomplish all three of these goals in any one event, but it is not impossible! From golf tournaments to galas, each event has the potential to meet the expectations of your board, staff, and supporters. Come learn the practices that lead to successful special events and leave prepared to take your next event from good to great!

Beth Lynn Hoey, CFRE, has been in the fundraising field for more than 20 years. She currently serves as director of development of Francis House, a nonprofit that provides a home and a supportive extended family to people with terminal illnesses. In her role she oversees all development, fundraising and public relations activities, including the successful and expanding There’s No Place Like Home event. Beth created this event, which has grown to welcome over 2,400 guests and yields a net profit of $300,000 a year.
For more than 40 years, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) has been the standard-bearer for professionalism in fundraising. AFP represents 25,000 members in 163 chapters in the United States, Canada and Mexico, all working to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, education and certification programs.
Among our main purposes is the promotion of the AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice and the Donor Bill of Rights.
