Due to a strong chance of heavy rains, this program has
been rescheduled for THURSDAY, MAY 3.

Celebrate spring and Japanese culture at the year’s first PM @ The TM! Bring a blanket or tatami mat into the museum's lovely gardens for a screening of Honeymoon in Hell: Mr. and Mrs. Oki's Fabulous Trip. Released in Japan in 2011, Honeymoon in Hell follows the bizarre adventure of one couple's otherwordly vacation and has never been shown in Washington, D.C.

Venture indoors to explore the current exhibitions
Woven Treasures of Japan's Tawaraya Workshop and Sourcing the Museum, and stop by the craft station to make your own cherry blossom pin. Mix and match your own bento box with Kushi restaurant.

"Hapi hour" begins at 6 p.m., the film will screen at 7 p.m.

One drink included in ticket price (two drinks for museum members).

Presented in partnership with
The Pink Line Project and Washington Film Institute

About the film:

A Honeymoon in Hell: Mr and Mrs Oki's Fabulous Trip (Ôki-ke no tanoshii ryokô: Shinkon jigoku-hen)

Director: Ryûichi Honda, Japan, 112mins, 2011, Unclassified 18+

Matrimony hasn’t really improved life for long-time live-together couple Ooki and Saki. Then a local fortune-teller offers them the option of a very different getaway holiday: 40 days in hell. Director Honda is one of the most off-the-wall hunters/gatherers from the weird margins of J-pop culture, his filmography includes homages to Russ Meyer and a hit movie tribute to the ‘Group Sounds’ Japanese pop groups of the 1960s. So whilst the plot reminds just a little of Tim Burton’s cult Beetlejuice, Honda has plenty of his own, highly original and very bizarre special effects comedy universe to draw on – whilst also scoring some smart screwball comedy points about the state of the modern Japanese marriage.
