PLEASE NOTE: This workshop is only open to people older than 15. If you are 15-18, you need to bring along your parent or your parental consent form. Anyone younger than 15 will be turned away, as will anyone 15-18 without an accompanying guardian or parental consent form. We're sorry for the trouble, but MIT Museum policy requires it.
The Atari Punk Console (APC) is a synthesizer circuit that makes sounds like those created by early Atari video game consoles. In this workshop—coordinated by Jimmie Rodgers and the MIT Museum—we'll explore the basic ideas behind the circuits used to make these crazy sounds. Participants will also learn how to solder, change the sounds the APC makes, and use light to control the sounds and end up with a simple light Theremin.
All parts and tools included in the costs. Additional parts will be available, so you will be able to customize your APC with lights, touch contacts, light sensors, etc. You'll also be making your own case for the APC, so feel free to bring something awesome (e.g. cigar box, mint tin, Mr. Potato Head, etc.), anything hollow that can hold a deck of cards will do. If you don't have a case, then Altoid tins will be available at the workshop.
This workshop is great for kids, kids at heart, or anyone who wants to learn about electronic sound and music making. If you have any questions, feel free to drop Jimmie a line. Be sure to bring a copy of your ticket/receipt to the workshop for admission to the Museum, and if you're under 18, please bring along your parent or your parental consent form.
