14-year old Ben is battling leukemia. He’s an active, intelligent, and thoughtful 8th grader from Chicago. Medical bills are starting to build up - you can help! Even though he is in remission (yay!), Ben is facing 3 more years of chemo and/or a bone marrow transplant. This means many, many bills ahead. Please attend our fundraiser to help the family!
Even with health insurance, costs can add up. Read more about Ben's journey at: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/benguliziacowing/guestbook
As we noted, Ben recently went into remission but he failed his first three rounds of chemotherapy. 95% of kids go into remission after the 1st round with his sub-type, so he’s in a very high-risk category in terms of the cancer returning. Because of this, Ben’s road to recovery is far from over.
What's going on during the event?
1) A LASAGNA COOK OFF AND POTLUCK - Go to http://tinyurl.com/teamben2
to sign up for a dish.
2) A Clothing Layers Contest - We will award both an adult and kids able to wear the most layers at once and still be able to run around the room - practice and bring your layers with you!
3) Kid activities (10 and under), teen activities, and a kid-only room with babysitters!
More about Ben: Ben attends Lane Tech's accelerated 7th/8th-grade program. He loves baseball, and he was looking forward to taking Honors Geometry this fall. But everything changed in mid-July, Ben was diagnosed with leukemia.
Ben is very pragmatic, so the science of leukemia was fascinating to him at first. Now, he’s just too sick, and it’s hard for him to sustain his usual love of learning.
The family is hoping that this experience one day will just be part of the family lore, told to explain why Ben became a doctor and cancer specialist!
