to honor

Ben Jankowski

An Oyster Bay resident, Ben Jankowski was Chairman of the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum from 1998 to 2011.

During his tenure, Ben oversaw promotion, outreach, and awareness of the museum’s programs in the New York metropolitan area. Ben managed the museum to become a not-for-profit under the New York State Department of Education purview.   He also implemented educational outreach with Nassau BOCES/Barry Tech to train students on the repair of historic railroad equipment, and was also instrumental in writing and implementing the museum’s business plan.

Ben procured over $1.7 million in grants, campaigns, and gift giving for historic railroad equipment restoration, Steam Locomotive 35, and for the Federal Register of Historic Places turntable and the Oyster Bay Train Station used by President Theodore Roosevelt.

A co-founder of Save the Jewel by the Bay, Ben worked with Town of Oyster Bay (TOB) officials to review and restructure existing zoning laws to protect historic residential buildings in the Hamlet of Oyster Bay and surrounding areas. He co-organized the Oyster Bay Hamlet Tree Preservation committee to restructure and implement a new tree ordinance which was adopted originally for the Hamlet, then for the entire Town of Oyster Bay.  In cooperation with other civic, environmental, and historical organizations, persuaded TOB in 2012 not to abolish the tree ordinance, and is working with all groups and organizations to review the ordinance.

Ben has also served on the Town ofyster Bay Eastern Waterfront Steering Committeend the Oyster Bay Preservation Roundtable.  He holds Bachelor and Master Degrees from St. Johns University.
