Cynthia and Greg met Alexis Grossman on their trip to Belize in May. At the time, Alexis was an intern at Maya Mountain Cacao. Now, Alexis is in San Francisco and is coming to Dandelion to talk about her experiences in Belize! She'll talk about her time spent in Southern Belize working with Maya Mountain Cacao (MMC) as their quality and transparency manager.
Alexis was there for six months working at the MMC centralized processing facility where cacao is fermented and prepared for export to the USA. MMC is an impact driven company that sources premium quality cacao from smallholder farmers in Belize. MMC works to catalyze growth in the local cacao growing communities in Belize by providing access to valuable new markets, improved farmer services, centralized fermentation and drying, and direct investment in increasing national cacao production volumes. Working with MMC allowed Alexis the opportunity to work and live at origin and experience first-hand the many levels and intricacies of working with producers to improve efficiency and quality of product, community, and daily work life. During her six months in Belize, she worked with a team at the MMC central processing facility located in the jungle, where she directed an effort in quality, focusing on consistency, transparency, and instituting a tracking system in order to have records and in-depth information on every batch of cacao processed at the facility.
