Behavior of Dams Under Large Floods

Location:      Crowne Plaza, 690 Route 46 East, Fairfield, NJ

 

The presentation will discuss the damages to the Deerfield River Project consisting of 8 dams located on the Deerfield River crossing from Vermont to Massachussetts due to Irene.  The flood characteristics during the Irene event will be compared with previous large floods within the basin.

 

Two case studies elucidating the cause and effect of damages to the dams will be presented including an evaluation of potential failure modes of dams subject to large floods.

 

Over recent decades large floods have been happening with frightening regularity.  Understand the behavior of dams under large floods is essential to guarantee their safety, reduce risks and be able to anticipate possible problems.

 

This program is under review for 1 PDH hour.
