BBG Research Series: Media Use in Zimbabwe 2012

Rise in Satellite Ownership, Internet Use

The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) and Gallup invite you to attend a BBG Research Series briefing on media use in Zimbabwe. The BBG and Gallup will discuss new findings about media consumption habits in Zimbabwe, including the tremendous growth of the digital sector alongside the enduring popularity of satellite TV.

For the past several years, Zimbabwe has been a leader in Sub-Saharan Africa for satellite dish ownership, and this trend has further intensified. One third of households have a satellite dish. TV has become a key means of reaching urban Zimbabweans; for example, at 8 p.m. close to half of urban Zimbabweans are watching television while just 7 percent listen to the radio.

The new media sector has also experienced strong growth in Zimbabwe. Past-week Internet use has more than doubled in the past year, standing now at 22 percent. Mobile phones are the most popular means to access the Internet, and 9 in 10 regular Internet users go online through a mobile phone. Twenty-one percent of all Zimbabwean adults aged 15+ have visited Facebook in the past week. Three quarters of regular Internet users name Facebook among their top three websites for news and information.

The panel will explore these findings and other data from the new research from Zimbabwe.

Speakers will include:

  • Chris Stewart, Senior Managing Consultant, Gallup
  • Bruce Sherman, Director, Office of Strategy and Development, BBG
  • Sonja Gloeckle, Africa Research Analyst, International Broadcasting Bureau
  • Jenna Levy, Consulting Specialist, Gallup

The event will include a presentation of the key findings from the study, as well as a methodological overview and a review of historical media trends in Zimbabwe.
