Event Details

Dear BayPay Members ,

The BayPay Forum provides many opportunities to learn and network with other payment professionals. After Loyalty, Couponing and Mobility in January at Wilson Sonsini, Social Commerce in February at Intuit, Startup Funding in payment and commerce in March at Silicon Valley Bank and Mobile Payments in the San Francisco Bay Area at Orrick, we are now taking a look at Mobile Commerce in Los Angeles at City National Bank on May 28.

A few weeks ago, we were invited to present at the FS-ISAC (part of Homeland Security) on “Emerging Payments – Emerging Risks”. Everyone is talking about Mobile as the new era. While we agree, we wanted to show the phenomena and its impact with real data. We are all about innovation in payments and commerce so we took as an example Black Friday, which is the biggest retail day of the year in the US and compared traffic on mobile devices on that day.

The result? In 2010, internet traffic on mobile devices represented 6% of the overall traffic, in 2011, 14% and in 2012, a few months ago, 24%.

This demonstrates that more and more consumers are using their mobile devices to make decisions so going to the store is the last part of the transactions for many. At the last RAMP conference in Chicago, we had the opportunity to discuss with many retailers, small and large, and mobile devices are increasingly a critical part of the customer engagement process.

With this new way of shopping, payment has to be frictionless and part of this process. So in this new edition of the BayPay Forum events, we will look at how carrier billing solves the problems for many merchants in the digital world. We will discuss how we got where we are with NFC at the Point of Sales and how to succeed in cross border money transfer.

We had the choice between several locations in Los Angeles for this event but we selected City National Bank for several reasons. Russell Goldsmith, CNB's CEO is an entrepreneur like many of us. Banks are fighting fiercely for business and the 4 larger banks have a big advantage with their national networks. So, it will be interesting to have Russell as a speaker to share his vision and explain how a bank like CNB uses technology to stay competitive and even beat the big guys in certain markets.

This event will start with a networking breakfast so don’t forget your business cards.

Thank you to our host City National Bank for making this event possible.

The BayPay Forum

If you are a member of the payment industry, you are invited to join BayPay, a networking group of the Silicon Valley focused on payments and composed exclusively of members in the payment community or investors in this area. If you are not yet a member and would like to join, reply to this email to get your free membership with a quick description on how you fit in the payment industry. Even after all these years, the payments industry is still expanding in both mature and emerging markets worldwide as the industry adapts to new market opportunities. New technologies including contactless cards, cell phone integration, biometrics, RFID and strong authentication are emerging and potentially creating new challenges for both financial institutions and their customers. Prepaid cards, gift cards, new forms of payment like PayPal, are all vivid demonstrations of the vibrancy of new thinking in the payments industry. With wireless ubiquity now essentially a reality, transaction aggregation and micro payments become a necessity. As the financial industry and merchants provide more and more services online, phishing emerges as a problem that requires more education and communication with consumers.

Objective BayPay's primary goal is to provide a face-to-face professional networking forum for the regular exchange of views on these issues among active professionals within the payments industry who are located in the San Francisco Bay Area. An online BayPay group on Yahoo! provides opportunities for members to interact among themselves between regular face-to-face meetings.

BayPay Is a joint initiative of Glenbrook, Edgar Dunn & Company and Daniel Chatelain from QSecure, Inc. that is open to other companies or individuals contributions.

Membership To ensure an appropriate level of professional participation, membership in BayPay group is by invitation only. BayPay members invite others to join based upon their own judgment as to who could best contribute to the group. To subscribe please go here.
