Event Details

Mobile Payment is without question the hot topic of 2011 and it is often seen as synonymous with NFC. Yet NFC (near field communication) is just “a set of short-range wireless technologies” (Wikipedia) used to establish communication between a payment medium such as a card with a chip or a mobile phone, and a merchant terminal. A range of other technical ways are available to accomplish this connection, such as optical communication using bar codes or other solutions and NFC is only a small technical aspect in the complex mobile payment scenario.

Looking at mobile payment solutions that go beyond NFC and beyond plastic cards not only focuses on the actual payment process and systemic changes influenced by the use of mobile devices, it also gives a fresh view on state-of-the-art solutions that may be more effective and cheaper to deploy lthan NFC that was standardized in 2003.

A panel of 4 – 5 experts will discuss the business impact of different mobile payment solutions and retail transaction technologies.

Carol is passionate about improving people’s lives through delivering universal and affordable access to financial services through mobile technology. She has focused her latest venture, Obopay, on addressing this issue.

There are now over 5 billion mobile phones in the world with penetration of mobile phones even in the remotest areas of the world; however, there are only around 1.5 billion people with access to bank accounts. Carol’s vision to start Obopay took root when she witnessed this first hand while traveling in Africa, where she saw people with mobile phones who were un-served by traditional banking. By leveraging the growing mobile network, Carol had the vision to use mobile technology to bring access to financial services to people that have never had them before. Access to banking through mobile devices holds the promise to bridge the gap in access to financial services and in doing so the potential to empower the life and work of millions of people and small businesses around the world.

Obopay was selected as a 2010 Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum for its work in this area. Carol has also worked to craft partnerships with leading financial institutions such as MasterCard and FIS Global; and by mobile carriers and technology providers such as AT&T, Verizon, Nokia and Qualcomm in order to help realize her vision.

The BayPay Forum

If you are a member of the payment industry, you are invited to join BayPay, a networking group of the Silicon Valley focused on payments and composed exclusively of members in the payment community or investors in this area. If you are not yet a member and would like to join, reply to this email to get your free membership with a quick description on how you fit in the payment industry. Even after all these years, the payments industry is still expanding in both mature and emerging markets worldwide as the industry adapts to new market opportunities. New technologies including contactless cards, cell phone integration, biometrics, RFID and strong authentication are emerging and potentially creating new challenges for both financial institutions and their customers. Prepaid cards, gift cards, new forms of payment like PayPal, are all vivid demonstrations of the vibrancy of new thinking in the payments industry. With wireless ubiquity now essentially a reality, transaction aggregation and micro payments become a necessity. As the financial industry and merchants provide more and more services online, phishing emerges as a problem that requires more education and communication with consumers.

Objective BayPay's primary goal is to provide a face-to-face professional networking forum for the regular exchange of views on these issues among active professionals within the payments industry who are located in the San Francisco Bay Area. An online BayPay group on Yahoo! provides opportunities for members to interact among themselves between regular face-to-face meetings.

BayPay Is a joint initiative of Glenbrook, Edgar Dunn & Company and Daniel Chatelain from QSecure, Inc. that is open to other companies or individuals contributions.

Membership To ensure an appropriate level of professional participation, membership in BayPay group is by invitation only. BayPay members invite others to join based upon their own judgment as to who could best contribute to the group. To subscribe please go here.
