Bike Maintenance

Description:

This course covers basic bicycle maintenance concepts.  Topics covered in the course include changing a flat tire, drivetrain basics, brake systems maintenance, and bearings systems adjustments.  Students will be performing the maintenance themselves, on their own bicycles, after a short instruction and demonstration.  This is a basic course, and some bicycle types may be outside of the scope of the course.  There will be accommodation available for those without their own bicycles or with incompatible models.

Class Goals:

The goal of this course is to get students comfortable working with their bicycles.

Prerequisites:

The only prerequisite is the desire to learn.

Materials:

Whenever possible, ride your bicycle to class. Students who don’t bring their bicycle class may be teamed up with someone else, or they may be assigned a bicycle to work on depending on the lesson. Wear clothing that you do not mind getting some road grime and grease on.

Instructor Biography:

Seven of Nine

“Seven” as she’s commonly known, has learned her bicycle maintenance skills through a combination of Broadway Bicycle School training, and spending inordinate amounts of time around SCUL headquarters (a positive bicycle chopper gang). Seven maintains a small fleet of “normal” bicycles, has built and maintained her own modified bicycles, and she likes to read bicycle repair manuals for kicks. Seven enjoys maintenance best when her SCUL comrades get together and ask her two or three “how do I…” questions at once. She’s also keen on hot yoga, meditation, making electronics go, and treasures playtime with friends.
