Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project: New York, NY
Saturday, August 10, 2013 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM (EDT)
New York, NY
The Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project, now in its seventh year, helps keep beaches, rivers, parks and lakes across America “barefoot friendly.” In 2013, Barefoot Wine and the Surfrider Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches, along with community volunteers, are embarking on a tour of 15 cleanups nationwide, stopping in Rockaway, NY on Saturday, August 10th for a dune creation.
Come lend a hand (or a foot!) to help restore Rockaway Beach after the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Volunteers will be taking old Christmas trees collected by the City of New York and placing them in designated areas throughout Rockaway Beach. The trees will be arranged and tied down in a pattern to encourage sand to collect when blown by the wind. The goal is for these trees to grow into small mounds of sand after a few months, small dunes after one year, and full dune after two years.
Afterwards, volunteers are invited to attend a celebration, organized by the Surfrider Foundation, featuring Barefoot Wine, surf-inspired fare and a live musical performance by acclaimed rock artist Ryan Star.
