Thank you for your interest in volunteering with City Slicker Farms' Backyard Garden Program! We look forward to working with you. Before you volunteer, please read the following information about what to expect on the day of the build:
City Slicker Farms supports and empowers West Oakland residents to grow their own food, and one way we do that is by building backyard gardens. We provide plants, supplies, mentoring, and workshops to support participants to be successful gardeners and community food leaders. By volunteering with City Slicker Farms' Backyard Garden program, you will be increasing food access and strengthening the leadership of West Oakland residents.
Backyard Garden builds take place at the homes and in the backyards of West Oakland residents. When attending a garden build, remember you are at someone's home.By volunteering with us you agree to be respectful, mindful of following the lead of the backyard gardener, and follow the instructions of the Backyard Garden Coordinator who will be leading the volunteer work day. And remember we are all there to support the new backyard gardener, this is our first priority!
During the garden build we will be assembling raised bed planter boxes, preparing the existing soil, filling up the planter boxes with soil and compost, planting edible plants in the boxes, and planting a fruit tree. Please be prepared to work physically and wear work clothes and sturdy closed-toe shoes, and bring water, sunscreen, a snack, and work gloves if you have them. The Backyard Garden Coordinator will assign you different tasks throughout the day, so please be prepared to be flexible. The garden build will take about four hours to complete.
There are many people who would love to volunteer, so only sign up if you can actually make it. We need your help!
If you have any questions, please contact the Backyard Garden Coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org or (510) 763-4241. We look forward to building gardens in West Oakland with you!
