History of Babes in Toyland- The original production of Babes in Toyland opened at the Chicago Grand Opera in 1903 and played for three months before moving to New York City where it played on Broadway for over 192 performances. It was produced by Fred Hamlin and directed by Julian Mitchell. The show, trying to mimic the success of “The Wizard of Oz” (Librettist Glen MacDonough worked on this production) weaves together Mother Goose nursery rhyme characters with the spectacular music of Victor Herbert. Throughout the years it has been largely re-written and pastiched together to be a Christmas spectacular with plot changes that no longer resemble the original production. Chicago Folks Operetta’s adaptation is closer in spirit to the original and resurrects songs that have not been performed in over fifty years.
