I bought a camera - now what?  How do I take better pictures? I need (or want) to take photos for my small business.  How do I do a professional looking job?

About the class

Learn how to use your DSLR, point and shoot or iPhone to take great photos.  This is a hands on class - you are going to take pictures! Students will be asked to bring their favorite camera and we'll take a few shots of a tableau, a portrait, a landscape. Then we will go over some basic photography tips - most likely via Powerpoint - and then revisit those photos.  Students will learn the basics of what makes a professional looking photography, the essential terms such as aperture and ISO speeds, and how to use the histogram tool on your camera.  We'll learn how to avoid some common beginning photography mistakes such as backlighting, and what to do if you're stuck with a basic camera (you can still take great pictures!).  This class will be oriented around the beginning photographer who wants to get a few professional tips under their belt.

Photography is hot. Not only are people embracing it as a personal hobby, but your ability to take a professional looking photograph can help your small business - no matter what it is. Whether they be marketing photos for the website, headshots for LinkedIn, or just the picture on your drivers license, how you photograph is part of your brand.
Photography tells a story. You have a story; photography can help you tell it. Bring the world in front of your camera to your audience, whether it be around the corner or 5000 miles away.  Photography is the focus of my small business. It may open up new worlds for you and help you be curious about your surroundings. Photography is exploration.

About Adam

He has a Masters degree in Graphics, and spent 10 years in UX and visual design for the video game industry.  He is currently launching a small business focused on local photography - he describes it as Instagram meets Google Maps.  He is also a student at the New York Institute of Photography.  His favorite thing to photograph is the city of San Francisco; a better photo subject could not be found, and it's right outside your front door!  He owns a Sony NEX-7 DSLR, but you can also find him taking pictures on his iPhone or his point and shoot.  Photography is a window onto another world, and understanding it will show you a new way to tell your own stories.
