2013 AWHONN CA Section Conference

Program Description and Objectives

March 1-2, 2013

This year’s California AWHONN two day conference focuses on relevant clinical knowledge for the direct care nurse. Using essential clinical knowledge and tools, safety for both the patient and the clinician will be discussed. For the first time ever, three leaders of the 3 prominent organizations for mothers and babies (AWHONN, ACNM, and ACOG) will be represented to collaborate for patient safety. New practices will be promoted and the latest legislative issues regarding the new Congress will be offered. A new toolkit will be introduced regarding preeclampsia. Puzzling disease processes will be explained. In every session, promotion of health for women and newborns will be highlighted

Conference Objectives: At the conclusion of this 1.5 day conference, the learner will be able to:

  1.  Apply strategies for increasing the effectiveness of clinical communication for the improvement of inter-professional collaboration.
  2.  Develop a comprehensive plan and sustained focus to achieve more frequent immediate skin-to-skin contact between mothers and their newborns.
  3.  Explain needed directions to ensure patient safety emphasizing interdisciplinary strategies for the future and how professional organizations can work together to achieve them.
  4.  Design process and outcome measures to evaluate and analyze the impact of a standardized approach to preeclampsia recognition, diagnosis and management.
  5.  Identify the physiologic modifications in pregnancy that place a woman at increased risk for the development of DIC during pregnancy or in the immediate postpartum period
  6.  Describe how lactate is a marker for the diagnosis, prognosis, and/or treatment of sepsis and their relationship to maternal mortality.
  7.  Describe one facility’s journey for decreasing risks and improving outcomes of infants requiring delivery room management.
  8.  Discuss the value of creating meaningful partnerships among the heath care delivery team.
  9.  Discuss clinical implications from forced and coerced obstetrical interventions.
  10.  Appreciate the value of birth and its lasting effects for the woman, infant, and her family.

This 1-day course focuses on the principles of adult learning and the application of same to the Intermediate Course. Each participant is required to present an assigned segment of the Intermediate Course during the day. Eligibility: must be an AWHONN member and have taken the 2-day AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course in the past 2 years.
Purchase of the Student Pack is an extra cost of $200.

The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program is designed for the period following resuscitation of the newborn until care is transferred to the neonatal transport team or members of the neonatal ICU team. This mnemonic based tool focuses on the post-resuscitation care of sick neonates including physical assessment, problem recognition and patient management. The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program is a concise, directive tool to help maternal/child healthcare providers to organize the myriad of details and interventions necessary to provide care to a sick and/or premature infant. The program has also evolved to serve as an orientation tool for the neonatal ICU.Purchase of the 6th Edition STABLE Program Learner Manual at $44.95 is required. A separate flyer will be sent with your paid course.

 

ObLS: Life without ACLS; Certification OB Nurses Can Live With 0800-1200 (4 contact hours)

Instructor: Andrea Puck

In June of 2010, AWHONN published a position statement specifying that ACLS certification was not required for L&D staff caring for post anesthesia obstetric patients in the labor and delivery unit. That change in requirements opened up the doors for creation of life support and obstetric emergency training tailored to the needs of obstetric patients and providers. This workshop will provide an overview of the creation of an obstetric life support training program.

 

Breastfeeding Tidbits 1300-1600 (3 contact hours)

Breastfeeding from a Public Health Perspective:
Participants will be able to
- describe maternal, infant and Public Health benefits of breastfeeding .
-describe WHO and NIH, as well as local health sector, position statements on maternal-child health as it relates to breastfeeding.
-list criteria of a Baby Friendly hospital.

Basic Breastfeeding Concepts in the Initial Postpartum Period:
Participants will
-have knowledge of basic breast anatomy and milk production.
-have knowledge of basic breastfeeding skills in order to assist mothers breastfeed their infants in the initial postpartum period.
-have knowledge of more advanced skills and devices used to assist mothers breastfeed their infants in the postpartum setting.
-describe common challenges or obstacles to breastfeeding in initial postpartum period and beyond.
