Event Details

Twilio and Autism Speaks are partnering up to host a 24 hour hackathon at the new Twilio HQ

According to the CDC, 1 in 88 children are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), up from 1 in 150 in 2000. That 1 in 150 are now entering the workforce, applying to colleges and trying to find housing just like the rest of us adults, but they have the added challenges that come with having ASD. At this hackathon, the objective will be on solving the big and the day-to-day issues that adults and individuals transitioning from school or services with autism spectrum disorder face. Let’s come together to create solutions to these challenges.

Don’t worry if you don’t have programming skills!

The event is open to anyone who wants to be involved. We need subject matter experts, coders, designers, information architects and everyone who wants to use technology to make a difference in the lives of those on the autism spectrum.

We provide the grub, snacks and beverages. You provide your talents and technology. We recommend that you bring a laptop if you plan on developing or designing. We will have speakers and a presentation of ideas at the end.

Prizes will be awarded, but more importantly you'll be part of a discussion that could improve the lives of those who are struggling with these issues.

Partners and speakers will be announced as we get close to the date of the event.

Here are some tool kits if you're planning on attending:

Themes for the Hack

1. Employment - Employers need to know the accomodations that they should make for those with autism and the employee needs to kow how to clearly communcate those needs. It could be something that the person could reference for tips on how to behave in an office. It could be a tracking app for the job coach. It could even be a service that helped to craft a form letter with accomodations in it that was a clear and appropriate business communication.

2. Post Secondary Education - It's hard to ask for help and many people with autism in school just don't ask for the accomodations that they need to flourish in the classroom to avoid the social situation of approsching the professor. Professors need to be made aware in a clear, and comfortable to the student, way of what those needs are. This could cover tips for new social situations on campus like working in groups or getting help at the library.

3. Dating/Relationships - This would address  sexuality issues, and a lot of adults with ASD don’t feel they understand what is expected of them on a date, what they should do and talk about, what is ok and what is inappropriate, how they should ask for what they want, and how to behave. Many people with ASD also have repetitve behavoirs or trouble maintaining eye contact and this can be off putting to those who might not understand it at the beginning. What is the best way to communicate that on a first date?

4. Roommates - Can you help connect adults with ASD to other adults w/ASD looking for compatible roommates (location, personality, support needs and financial necessities, etc.)

5. Appropriate Behavoirs - Many people with ASD have trouble monitoring how loud they are, where they are in space, how close they are to other people and they often times use repetitive behavoirs called "stimming" to help them remain calm especially in stressful stiuations.
