Using the Social Response Pyramid™, Laurel Falvo will demonstrate how people produce socially effective responses, and how both "neurotypicals" and individuals with autism can use this tool to develop and utilize a toolbox of strategies for social success. You will also learn Laurel's "Three Basic Truths" and "Three Types of Social Coaching," and how you and individuals with autism (and their families) can use these principles to successfully "balance the social teeter totter" to enjoy social success!
Participants will be able to:
- List at least five similarities and five differences between "neurotypicals" and individuals with autism
- Describe and demonstrate the use of the Social Response Pyramid™
- Define the difference between authentic and socially effective responses (and why it matters!)
- Demonstrate how to produce socially effective responses through the use of a variety of strategies

Laurel Falvo, CFLE (Certified Family Life Educator) is the Executive Director of The Gray Center, a Social Coach, and a registered Social Service Technician. She is a graduate of Calvin College. Previously, she taught first grade at Hudsonville Christian School. In addition to her work with the Gray Center, for ten years Laurel was associated with Early On of Kent County, serving on the Local Inter-Agency Coordinating Council. She has more recently been sworn in as a CASA volunteer (Court Appointed Special Advocate) for children who have been abused and neglected. Laurel is the author of a variety of resources, including More Than a Sum of Diagnostic Differences: A Positive Perspective on Autism and Asperger Syndrome, and ASD to Z: Basic Information, Support, and Hope for Individuals Living with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and her DVD, Why Do They Do That? Answers to Questions You Might Have About People with Autism and Asperger Syndrome...and Tips You Can Use to Help Them!. Her educational tool, The Social Response Pyramid™, is being widely used to promote social understanding and social effectiveness. Her weekly email article, "Social Incites™" goes to thousands of subscribers around the world.
Laurel and her husband Steve have three sons and a daughter.
The registration fee for this event is $20 per person ($10 per student) This includes admission to all sessions and afternoon refreshments. You are responsible for your own transportation to and from the conference. If you need rental car or taxi information, please let us know. Shuttles between the Prince Conference Center at Calvin College and the airport are available at no cost for guests of the Prince Conference Center. To arrange for a shuttle, please contact the Prince Conference Center at 1.866.526.7200. In addition, many hotels offer complementary shuttle service to and from the airport for hotel guests. Check with your hotel for more information.
