The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) Teaching Symposium at Iowa State University will be held on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 for new faculty and teaching assistants.

Symposium Goals

  • To learn about policies, practices and resources that effect teaching and learning at Iowa State University.
  • To become familiar with common student issues, successes and be able to guide students to various campus resources.
  • To discover the services, resources and development opportunities provided by CELT.

2015 Agendas*

Faculty Cohort - 175 Scheman Building, First Floor

  • 7:30 - 8:00 a.m. - New Faculty Meet/Greet with Continental Breakfast
  • 8:00 - 8:15 a.m. - Welcome
  • 8:20 - 8:40 a.m. - "Look who's coming to your classroom... the ISU Student"
  • 8:40 - 8:50 a.m. - Break
  • 9:00 - 10:40 a.m. - Supporting and Encouraging Student Success (Each one of the Pre-Symposium Learning Modules will provide key information that will inform the new faculty cohort about how-to solve four case-based student scenarios)
  • 10:40 - 11:00 a.m. - Meet/Greet with University Community Members & Break
  • 11:00 a.m. - Noon - Preparing for the First Week of Class & The Next Phase of Faculty Development at Iowa State

Teaching Assistant (TA) Cohort - Registration Booth, First Floor Lobby

  • 7:30 - 8:00 a.m. - will check-in at Registration Booth, First Floor Lobby
  • 8:00 - 8:50 a.m. - Welcome and Large Group Activity to Prepare for the First Week of Class (Benton Auditorium, 1st Floor)
  • 9:00 - 10:50 a.m. - Breakout Sessions (Each one of the Pre-Symposium Learning Modules will provide key information that will inform the TA cohort about how-to solve scenarios within their breakout groups)
  • 11:00 a.m. - Noon - Panel: Questions & Answers with Seasoned Teaching Assistants (Large Group Activity, Benton Auditorium, 1st Floor)

Pre-Symposium Online Learning Modules

Prior to the symposium, new faculty and teaching assistants will engage in online learning modules pertinent to teaching at Iowa State University.

Each module will have a video component, an inventory of understanding, and supplemental resources. Topics to be covered:

To access Pre-Symposium Learning Modules

You will need to register for a Net-ID (iastate email)) to log into Blackboard Learn. If you do not already have it you will want to create one with with your University-ID. To register for your Net-ID, you will need your University ID number (UID).

  • New Faculty will receive instructions on obtaining their University-ID in a welcome letter from Human Resources.
  • Graduate Students will receive instructions on obtaining their UID from the Office of Admissions upon accepting admission to Iowa State.

Your University ID is assigned to you when you receive an ID card (ISU Card). You may find your ID number on the front of your ID card or by logging in to AccessPlus with your social security number and clicking on “ISU IDs” on the AccessPlus homepage.

SVPP New Faculty Orientation

Wednesday, August 19, 2015 from 7:45 A.M. to 5:30 P.M.
Scheman Building, Iowa State Center, Iowa State University

All new tenured, tenure-eligible, and non-tenure-eligible faculty (assistant, associate, or full professors, lecturers, clinicians, and adjunct faculty hired since September 2014) attend an orientation specifically designed for them. The New Faculty Orientation gives new faculty the opportunity to meet with one another as well as with senior administrators at Iowa State. This day will include panel discussions with recently appointed junior faculty who will share their best practices to be successful at Iowa State, tips for your first year from the Dean(s) of your College, presentations on successful research programs and the importance of extension and outreach. Break-out sessions on the Ames community, flexible faculty policies, research funding, mentoring, and much more will be available to answer your questions and get you off to a great start. Senior Vice President and Provost Wickert will share his insight on what it means to be part of a land grant university. This day also provides new faculty with the opportunity to network and to socialize.
