Presented by the Atlanta Jazz Festival and the Georgia State University School of Music, the annual Youth Jazz Band Competition offers young jazz musicians from all over the metropolitan Atlanta area the opportunity to showcase their talent. The competition focuses on artistic and technical merits and features an outstanding judging panel. Thanks to a generous Bank of America sponsorship and to a Jazz at Lincoln Center partnership, the Youth Jazz Band Competition is expanding its scope this year and opening the competition doors to the public. Viewing the competition is free, but the capacity is limited, so register for your free ticket in advance to watch metro Atlanta's talented youth compete for a scholarship and for an opportunity to perform on the Main Stage at the Atlanta Jazz Festival!
This year the Atlanta Jazz Festival is partnering with Jazz at Lincoln Center to bring an exciting new educational element both onto competition stage and into the classrooms. All metro Atlanta high school jazz bands (whether they are competing in the Youth Jazz Band Competition or not!) are being granted access to Jazz at Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington program, a free program that includes eight original Duke Ellington Orchestra and Gerald Wilson Orchestra transcriptions, as well as access to reference recordings, a revolutionary interactive music player featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, teaching guides, newsletters and other resources. Directors can join the program online by visiting www.jalc.org/EssentiallyEllington and completing an online registration form. For questions about the Essentially Ellington program, directors can contact Maegan McHugh at 212.258.9810 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
