Spring Training 2013:  Movin' On Up

BFTS Approved

Early Childhood Conference

Tract One:  Guidance - Taking it to the NEXT Level! (Build on Basic guidance principles!)

Executive Function – What is it and how do we help our children develop it?   Executive Function. . . a set of mental processes that helps us connect past experience with present action . . . Current research shows us how children develop it, how we encourage it, and what happens when it doesn’t form.  Learn how to stage your programming, how to recognize processing challenges, and what to do at what stage of development to encourage children’s reasoning abilities.

Engineering our classrooms to meet the needs of children with challenges in Executive function, ADD, ADHD, and spectrum disorders.   Learn to create a classroom where you spend less time managing behavior and more time actively engaging students in meaningful learning.  Use the five factors psychologists have identified that encourage children, even those with identified behavior issues, to engage and interact rather than misbehave. Leave with practical strategies you can apply in your classroom or school.

Make It, Shake It, Explore It, Store It. . . Teacher-Mades to Liven Your Classroom! -  Learning centers need a perk up?  Center budget tight? Try these DIY enrichments and ideas to give your classroom a facelift for the spring and summer.

Tract Two: Summer’s Not Just for Schoolers. . .

Summer Camp is not just for Schoolers! Building A Rockin’ Sockin’ Program For ALL YOUR children. . (Part One and Two) Create a summer “break” for little ones of ALL ages with a summer that gives sizzlin’ hot fun!  Put your summer in turbo-drive with ideas that pump up your learning areas and fill your lesson plans with sizzlin’ hot fun.  Learn the components of a great summer camp, and give the kids in your program a break from the routine.  Jazz up the long summer days and create mini-camp experiences to keep interest high.  This four hour workshop allows for both brainstorming and planning so you’ll go home equipped to rock and roll for summer!

Birds, Butterfiles, Worms and Wigglies. . . creating habitats and nature spaces in the outdoors: The Outdoor Classroom  Expand your classroom to the great outdoors as the weather warms and children the days get longer.  From science to language and art, you’ll find ideas for meshing nature and learning.

Tract Three:  Classroom Management

Banning Bully Behaviors: Helping Children with aggression and impulsivity - Research shows that patterns of aggressiveness can be recognized as early as two, and suggests that early intervention can break bully patterns by decreasing aggression and impulsivity.   Learn what the experts are recommending and go back to your classroom armed with strategies to keep behaviors on track.

Classroom Management – Circle Times that Rock and Transitions that Roll -  Keep your classroom running smoothly with great large group times that kick the day off right, and tips for managing the transition times that often cause disruptive behaviors to emerge.

Choose afternoon session from the following:

○Make It, Shake It, Explore It, Store It. . .Teacher-Mades to Liven Your Classroom!

○Birds, Butterflies, Worms and Wigglies. . . creating habitats and nature spaces in the outdoors.

Tract Four:  Basics

Child Abuse: Recognition & Reporting - Learn the warning signs of child abuse and neglect; the legal reporting requirements for teachers, directors, and owners, and how to protect yourself from being accused of abuse.

Safety and Injury Control - Keep the little ones in your care safe and reduce liabilities by discovering these "safety musts" for the classroom, the playground and field trips. Participants in this class will also leave with a better understanding of the DHR reporting requirements for accidents and injuries.

Infectious Diseases - Recognition & Prevention - Proper hand washing and diapering procedures are just a few of the sanitary practices addressed in this course to help early childhood professionals learn how to reduce the risk of spreading illnesses in child care.
