Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment of Sex and Pornography Addictions in the New Media Frontier

The workshop will discuss survivor shame as it relates to addictive sex, while offering clear direction toward sexual sobriety and relationship healing. The effect of the new media frontier (social networks, smart phones and the like) will be woven into the discussion of how online life affects the problem of sexual addiction. This presentation will also review current research while also addressing issues and questions that may arise when working in day-to-day clinical practice related to extreme spousal betrayal. An overview of the most common characteristics of spousal betrayal will also be discussed. Often misunderstood and misdiagnosed, the problem of sexual addiction is one frequently presented by angry spouses who feel betrayed and men who have lost health, career and family-life goals to sexual acting out. This presentation offers an overview of the questions and concerns most often asked by sex addicts (of all sexual orientations) and their spouses/partners.

The material will offer a review of the diagnosis of sexual addiction, common behaviors and problems encountered by sex addicts, along with direction toward eliminating problem sexual behavior. The relationship between sexual addiction and early trauma survival will be reviewed along with pertinent discussion about managing and pacing recovery in multiple related areas such as behavioral (addictions) and emotional/relationship (intimacy problems). The influence of the Internet on sexual addiction (Smart Phone and Social Media based sex and porn) will be discussed and reviewed online. Participants will be offered a gender based model of sex addiction recovery and healing, commonly utilized in treatment. Questions will be reviewed and discussed regarding working through betrayal, psycho-education of the spouse, couples growth and healing intimacy bonds. Resources for additional help, along with useful reading, 12-step and clinical referral information will be provided. Interact  ive case consultation will be accompanied by a question and answer session.
