Assessment, Diagnosis and Intervention of Sex Addiction

This presentation will offer non-judgmental, clinical insight into the real life problem of sexual addiction and its relationship to adult intimacy and attachment disorders. This presentation will also review the proposed DSM 5 diagnosis for Hypersexual Disorder, while also addressing issues and questions that may arise when working in day-to-day clinical practice related to extreme spousal betrayal. The relationship of Internet technology to sexual addiction will be reviewed. Useful referrals will be provided. A panel discussion will explore the importance and need for clinical intervention, and will help professionals to identify when an intervention may be appropriate.

Often misunderstood and misdiagnosed, the problem of sexual addiction is one frequently presented by angry spouses who feel betrayed and men who have lost health, career and family-life goals to sexual acting out. This presentation, given by a well known sexual addiction treatment expert and author, offers an overview of the questions and concerns most often asked by sex addicts (of all sexual orientations) and their spouses/partners. The material will offer a review of the diagnosis of sexual addiction, common behaviors and problems encountered by sex addicts- with a focus on Internet technology. Questions will be reviewed and discussed regarding working through betrayal, psycho-education of the spouse, couples growth and healing intimacy bonds.

A panel discussion will explore and help identify when an intervention may be appropriate and Interactive case consultation will be accompanied by a question and answer session.  Resources for additional help, along with useful reading, 12-step and clinical referral information will be provided. The material presented with benefit professionals working with survivors and sex addicts, laypeople, family members, partners, and recovering sexual addicts.
