Got data? Got a problem you think data science might be able to solve?

Are you…

…a company with scads of data you think could be mined more effectively?

…a student looking to break into the world of quants & analysts?

…a start-up with urgent questions about your data?

Join Daniel Krasner and Ian Langmore, a couple of the world’s top data scientists, who will answer your questions:

  • How can data science help my business?
  • What data is the most useful, and how should I be collecting it?
  • What analysis can I do on my own and what do I need outside help with?
  • Who should I hire (i.e., what is the difference between a data scientist, a statistician, a finance quant, a computer scientist, CTO, and so on)?
  • What resources do I need and how do I get a better understanding of how much these can cost?
  • How can I detect pitfalls, fakes, cons and the like from real data science?
  • What do I need to do to become a data analyst and how should I pitch myself to companies?
  • What is big data and what do I need to know about it?

Mix of lecture, discussion, and networking.  Attendance limited to 25 participants.

Prior to entering the world of data science Daniel was a researcher at the Mathematical Research Institute in CA, and an assistant professor at UCLA. He holds a PhD in pure mathematics from Columbia University, having worked in the intersection of low-dimensional topology, representation theory and homological algebra, and a BS in math from UC Berkeley. He has numerous publications in the field. Previous to JRL Daniel was the Chief Data Scientist at Sailthru, an email and analytics platform, in charge of building the data team as well as running the analytics side of the business. His focus was on data mining, data visualization, recommendation systems, business intelligence, decision support and predictive behavioral modeling. Daniel is also the co-founder of KFit Solutions, a data science consulting firm, and has worked on projects in the hedge-fund, advertising, online news, and start-up space. After entering the private sector Daniel has written and spoken extensively on the subject of transition from academia to industry, as well as the data science space at large. He is also an adjunct professor at Columbia University, co-teaching Applied Data Science in the spring 2013. LinkedIn

About Ian Langmore
Senior Data Scientist, Johnson Research Labs & Adjunct Professor at Columbia University
Ian received a B.S. and M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of California in San Diego. Along the way he worked with the Institute for Nonlinear Science and the High-Speed Circuits and Devices Group. He then changed directions and completed a PhD in pure mathematics at the University of Washington in Seattle. After that he moved to NYC to work as a postdoc in the applied math department at Columbia University. He worked mostly at designing and proving theorems about Monte Carlo algorithms. Upon entering the private sector, Ian worked for Opera Solutions as a staff scientist where he developed default models for home loans. Events and Classes at the Stamford Innovation Center

As an incubator focused on being CT’s premiere resource for community-based Innovation, The SIC team is always on the lookout of ways to engage members of our community. We want to be the resource where people go when they have a question about technology, careers, business, strategy, etc. We are here to help the tech and startup community where we work and live and to participate in global thought leadership communities centered around new technology and business models.

In our work with Sikorsky, we are driving what we consider an important opportunity for smaller businesses to gain access to one of the worlds most demanding engineering organizations.  We enjoy our role as recruiter of businesses to apply for the Sikorsky Entrepreneurial Challenge.  And we really love coaching the finalists.

Our events are focused on delivering help and experise in key areas of business. We've hosted national leaders like Steve Hafner of Kayak, VCs including Marc Michel, Skyler Fernandes, and David Teten and many many others.

In the classroom setting, we now focus on a regular set of classes around fundimental modern skills including LinkedIn for personal and business use, Facebook ad campaigns, Branding, Strategy, etc.  Our goal is to provide a platform for professionals to learn and grow around skills that are critial, in a high-impact format that can't be matched by online courses or a traditional university.

If you have any ideas for a class you'd like to take or an event you'd like to see, please let us know by writing team (at) stamfordicenter.com.
