Balancing soft and technical skills is the key to a successful civil engineering career. Successful professionals including Natalie Meeks, Director of Public Works for the City of Anaheim, Kandice Sherwood, Recruitment/Employment and Organizational Development/Training Manager at the City of Anaheim, and Josue Vaglienty, Project Manager at RBF Consulting will present on ways to develop, balance, and utilize both soft and technical skills in an engineering career.
Please join your fellow civil engineers for an insightful and dynamic workshop hosted by OC YMF. The comprehensive panel of successful professionals who have sought to strike a balance between both skill sets will attempt to provide answers to the following questions:
1) How can I develop my soft skills?
2) How can I effectively balance my soft and technical skills?
3) How can I utilize these skills in my career to be successful?
4) Any additional questions the audience may have
Constantly enhancing our technical knowledge makes us, civil engineers of the 21st century, highly valuable to our society. In a sense, many younger engineers view technical skills as the supreme necessity and tend to consider soft skills as secondary. However, when it comes to exercising our knowledge into an organization and communicating effectively with team members for the successful completion of a project, a respected leader will distinguish themselves from an engineer of unbalanced technical and soft skills. Personal qualities, interpersonal skills, and knowledge in project management and decision-making form the panoply of a successful leader, whose attributes will encourage other team members to be led.

About the speakers
Natalie Meeks was appointed to the position of Director of Public Works for the City of Anaheim in June 2007. She is responsible for overseeing operations of 250 employees in many areas including engineering, transit planning, traffic and transportation, development services, records, real property, construction services, financial and administrative services, fleet and facility services, and Public Works operations. The Department of Public Works is currently taking the lead on two major transportation projects including the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC) in partnership with OCTA, and the Gene Autry Way bridge and road extension that will direclty connect the Platinum Triangle to the Anaheim Resort. Meeks received her bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from California State University, Fullerton and a master's degree in Organizational Leadership from Chapman University.
Kandice Taylor-Sherwood has a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology. She has been been working in the field of Human Resources, Organizational Development and Training for over 13 year. She currently is the Recruitment/Employment and Organizational Development/Training manager for the City of Anaheim. Kandice values learning and education and teaches graduate-level courses for California State University, Long Beach. She also owns her own consulting business, Sherwood Consulting, and has provided training services, organizational development interventions, and key note speeches in both the public and private sector. Kandice is certified as a master trainer with several training organizations such as Achieve Global, Leadership Strategies, Franklin Covey, ASTD, etc. She is certified to tain topics such as Inside Out Coaching, Project Management, FOCUS: Time Management, The Sevent Habits of Highly Effective People/Managers, the Four Disciplines, Leadership, and others. Kandice a certified in process facilitation, Meyers Brigs Personality assessment, and the DISC behavioral inventory. This allows her to perform one of her passions, which is helping teams to work and play together.
Josue Vaglienty has more than 9 years of experience in the field of civil engineering. Mr. Vaglienty began his career with RBF Consulting in Irvine, CA as an intern, while attending his last couple years of studying Civil Engineering at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Nine years later, he is now a Project Manager in the Transportation/Public Works Department. Josue has worked on projects for public and private clients, which include The Toll Roads, the Irvine Company, Caltrans OCTA, and multiple cities. He specializes in Plans, Specficications, Estimate (PS&E) delivery for freeway widening projects and has performed various design-bid-build assignments for Caltrans District 12 (Orange County), District 8 (Inland Empire), and District 11 (San Diego County). He holds PE licenses in California and in Utah. Mr. Vaglienty has been actively involved in ASCE - Orange County since 2006, and currently serves as the ASCE Branch Programs Chair and the Fundraising Chair for ASCE OC-YMF. He has attended various Project Management seminars and has learned from his own experiences, which he is pleased to share with his peers and younger staff. Developing the right balance of technical and soft skills is a challenge he continually strives for. During his free time, Mr. Vaglienty enjoys hiking, snowboarding, and especially eating.
