Behind every great art project there is a story to tell. Copper and Clay has organized a tour of the People Mover Stations in order to share the stories of organizers and artists who were responsible for one of the greatest collections of public art in the United States. You’re invited to tour and live tweet with us about #ArtInTheStations.
We will meet at the Guardian Building's Rowland Cafe at 12:30 PM and proceed to Financial District station to begin the tour. From there, we will visit six of the thirteen stops; at each stop, we will learn about the art, the artist, and the stories behind their projects. Art in the Stations artists Diana Pancioli, Tom Phardel and Allie McGhee will share their experiences producing their work. Pewabic’s former Fabrication Manager, artist David Ellison, will also join us to give a behind the scenes account of producing these large-scale ceramic installations.
The tour will finish at Financial District station and then return to the Guardian Building to enjoy some conversation with the artists and guests. For parking, we recommend parking at the Book Cadillac garage on Michigan Ave & Griswold or at the Compuware garage at 1188 Farmer Street. Metered street parking is also available. If you have any questions, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
A Little History:
In 1984, arts enthusiast Irene Walt developed an all-volunteer commission to select artists to create art work for thirteen People Mover stations and raise the necessary funds to pay for the artwork; Irene guided the project from start to finish. Pewabic Pottery and its staff at that time were a core part of the Art In the Stations project--supplying the workspace and the ceramics expertise for four of the installations.
Former director of the Detroit Institute of Arts, Sam Sachs II noted, “the People Mover stations contain a model for the nation of what a public art project can and should be. It is one of the finest art collections on daily view anywhere.”
