Event Details

ARHDC Lasting Impressions youth mentoring program serves 10 kids in the Jefferson and Orleans parish and 20 kids at the Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Louisiana in Gretna.   The mission of Lasting Impressions is to empower at-risk youth in our community to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their personal potential. The mentoring program is for kids’ ages 6-18 yrs old, which are in single parent homes.  The purpose of the program is to prevent and reduce juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, gang participation, truancy, and other problems associated with high-risk behavior.  The program provides youth with consistent caring mentors, they learn life skills, have group sessions, and offer anger management classes.  The program also offers parenting classes.  The program will add 25 kids per year.  The program implements the one-on-one and group mentoring models.  The mentor makes contact with their mentee at least once a week, and goes on an outing twice a month for at least 2 hours, for a year.  The mentee also attends either a life skills class, or a speak-out group session at least once a month.  The mentee will attend anger management classes as deemed neccassary.  The program coordinator also refers youth to mental health clinics to assist with social needs, on a case-by-case basis.  The program helps youth to develop important life skills, learn about the world of work, improve school attitude and school performance, and build self-confidence.

An advocate for young people, Tishlinn S Fountain, founded ARHDC, a nonprofit organization, in 2009 in the Greater New Orleans area. Fountain believes that many youth in their community lacked meaningful academic and career guidance. Determined to make a difference, Fountain put together a meeting for some single parents she knew, four single parent families attended the meeting and eight children were enrolled in the program. With initial financial commitments from community members and local businesses, Fountain affilated ARHDC under a group ruling with Daughters of Esther as a nonprofit IRS 501(c) 3 corporation. Since opening its doors, ARHDC has formed a colliboration with the Boys & Girls Club of Gretna.  Fountain has plans to collaborate with the school districts, and other youth–serving organizations in the community.
